how long until first OB appt?

Anonymous
I'm wondering if this is normal. I have a new OB, I got a positive HPT this morning, and when I called to schedule an appt they didn't give me one until 8/13...no blood test to confirm or anything, just wait until then for your appt. With my last pregnancy, the OB had me come in right away for a blood test and then it was another week or so until the appt. Just wondering if that is how alot of OB's work, or if this practice may just be too busy to accommodate me.

Thanks!

No, I think it is usual not to be seen until around week 8. I don't want to sound horrible but OBs usually wait until then to make sure the pregnancy is viable. Also, over the counter tests are now just as reliable as blood tests so if you are positive, you are pregnant.

My office sees you at 8-9 weeks.

My OB wanted me to come in for my first appointment at 8 or 9 weeks. I asked if I could come in earlier to get the blood test and they said I could but most people see no reason to as the home pregnancy tests are just as accurate. If you go in after 8 weeks, you will likely be able to see the heartbeat on the ultrasound (if your OB's office does the ultrasound).

I think this is typical. I went in earlier for one pregnancy to rule out an ectopic before some international travel. After miscarrying that pregnancy, I went in earlier on the next pregnancy to get a beta test. Otherwise, his standard practice is 8 weeks for a first appointment and that's how my first pregnancy was too.

This is my 3rd pregnancy - first time I had an early blood test to confirm; second time they said no appointment till 8 weeks. This time when I called to make the 8w appointment, they asked me to come in right away for a confirmation (pee, not blood, test.) I did have a M/C on the 2nd pregnancy but that didn't appear to factor into the thinking. I'm not sure why they changed. Since I was having spotting, they also did an ultrasound (it was week 6 by then) so it turned out to be a proper appointment rather than just the confirmation. Even still, they wouldn't talk due date or other details of the pregnancy until I was 8w.

One more vote for 8 weeks for first appt.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

OP here, thanks for the responses. The reason I am concerned is that I have a history of one ectopic and one early miscarriage. Maybe I will ask to speak to the doc to find out what he thinks.

My OB didn't want to see me until 8-10 weeks, but this was my first pregnancy with no prior history, I am sure if you are concerned they could get you earlier.

Congrats! I also had a positive HPT this weekend and my doctor saw me yesterday to do a blood test. I have one miscarriage in my history and have also been spotting, so I think that is the reason they wanted me in so quickly. Best wishes on your pregnancy!

I believe 8 weeks was when I saw my OB for my first pregnancy and they said that was the soonest they could see a new patient...perhaps because we spent a lot of time meeting the OB in his office, in addition to the exam and blood test. Unfortunately, I miscarried that pregancy (no heartbeat at 9 wks). The second time, they got me in the next day after I called with a positive HPT--I was just barely pregnant. But it wasn't like they looked at my file or anything to learn my history. An existing patient visit is just shorter, so they got me right in. In both cases, an ultrasound was scheduled for 8 or 9 weeks.

I agree that you should call your doctor in light of your history. Congrats!
