What's your bake sale winner?

My son just started preschool and we're having our first bake sale. I'm not a great baker so I'm feeling a little intimidated. A search for records actually had no really big posts on this issue so I'm hoping this one will start inspiring those of us who struggle in this department.

What is your "winner" at the bake sale? What sells well? What should you avoid?

Rice krispie treats

Seconding Rice Krispie treats. We can never make enough at our bake sale! Jazz them up with some mini m&ms pressed into the top (once the treats are somewhat cool).

Also, cupcakes. Even those gross boxed mix/jarred frosting ones sell out in a flash. And jimmies. Lots of jimmies in the frosting.

My first bake sale, I tried to do something healthy--homemade granola bars. I thought parents might not want to buy crap for their kids at 9am in the morning. I was wrong!

Smitten Kitchen's Brown Butter Rice Krispie Treats. Tiny additional effort, huge payoff.

Red velvet cupcakes. People go weak for red velvet.

Cupcakes from a box mix with pretty colors of dyed canned frosting and sprinkles - the kids love them. I'm one of those always-bakes-from-scratch types, but when it comes to bake sales it isn't worth the effort.

Is the bake sale going to be selling to the kids, or to adult passers-by?

Kids love sprinkles. Grownups love semisweet chocolate.

15:15 here. PP reminded me that I always make those Smitten Kitchen rice krispie treats. They're sooo good. I also add a little salt and it makes them taste like salted caramelly. mmmm.

Oddly enough -- it's brownies from a box mix. Kids tend to like them. It's weird. I think they taste gross.

I always make those 7-layer coconut bars & people love them. It's Graham cracker crumbs & melted butter for the crust, then semisweet chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, flaked coconut, then pour sweetened condensed milk over it & bake. They are SOOO good. Recipe is usually on the can of Eagle sweetened condensed milk (may be under the label). Really easy to make.

Generally the really sweet chocolatey stuff sells best. Fruity stuff like lemon bars, not so much.

Amazing how many people claim to dislike the box mixes. Everyone I know loves them! We must be the anti-foodie crowd, I guess.

Nothing. I have never seen a bake sale sell out of anything at any school at any time. I haven't even seen a sale were there is a good dent in the amount of stuff sold. Our school always has so much left over of every single treat mentioned above they have to beg people to take them home. I think its a huge waste.

Depends on the school. Ours had one last year with a ton of treats that totally sold out.
