Young girl walking around mall w/ a SQUIRREL on her shoulder at natl mall

Anonymous
Oy. So we went to both the nick fitness day and the natl book fair--long chaotic day. Nearing the end of the day we see a family, clearly from out of town, who are allowing their young daughter (9 or 10) walk around proudly with this squirrel on her shoulder. My kid see this and starts asking questions and I say " ugh. no. not a good idea....fleas, rabies....rodent, gross." The father turns around and looks at me and says confrontationally "what?" His wife gives me a shitty look. Really? It's a freaking rodent. So gross. Maybe posting will help me to shake this feeling of disgust, tho probably not. What the hell is wrong with people?

? Could a squirrel even do that? They normally quickly jump away when people approach.
Anonymous
oh no. squirrel was sitting on her shoulder, by her hair--like she was a human taxi.

Maybe it was her pet instead of just a random squirrel.

It's a pet. People around here have rodent pets in case you didn't notice:

Hamster
Guinea Pig
Mouse
Rabbits are close cousins of rodents

OP,

This was no doubt a pet squirrel. Squirrels are mammals. Do your research before you give your answers.

Bottom line: You're wrong! The people from out of town are right!

If it was a random squirrel, she must be the squirrel whisperer, and I am impressed.

OP,
What will you do if your son asks for gerbils for his next birthday? RODENT!

being a mammal doesn't mean a squirrel isn't a rodent

just as being a mammal doesn't mean a dog isn't a canine

People around here do not carry rodents pr "pets" in public. You people probably think it's ok to feed city birds too. Breaking news: It is not ok, or legal, to feed the birds or carry squirrels, either wild or domesticated, in public spaces.

OP,

I'm with you.

gross

And can you really keep a squirrel as a domesticated pet?

I don't think so.

You were obviously behind a family of freaks.

The squirrels at the mall are really tame - really really tame. So much so I had to run from them before because they are GROSS. I agree with you OP.

OP, why do you care? It's not like she was chasing you with the squirrel.

It's fine. Teach your kid what you want, but don't disparage the squirrel fans.

OK, PP - Since you're an obvious wild mammal lover, here's your next pet.
