How do you style curly hair?

Anonymous
My 4-yr old daughter has crazy curls- lots of spiral ringlets, frizz, etc. My hair is pin straight. Now that she is getting older, it is starting to look out of control. It knots a lot, too. She likes it long, but I guess I should start using some sort of product on it? How should I style or cut it (what would I ask the stylist to do)? She's only had one haircut to trim the back, which was about a year ago. Lately I've just been putting it in a ponytail because I've given up. Ideas?

Do you use conditioner? I'd try a regular conditioner and/or a leave-in conditioner. If it's still out of control after that, maybe try a teeny bit of a light hair gel.

shampoo, conditioner, teeny weeny bit of pure morrocan argan oil, scrunch.

My DD is the same (and I'm quite curly too). Each morning you'll need to spray with a detangling spray (I think Fairy Tales Static Free Detangler is best - you can get it from Cartoon Cuts) and comb with a wide tooth comb.

When she's older you'll probably want to follow the Lorraine Massy 'curly girl' routine. This video shows how I do mine (using a curl cream or light gel depending on the weather):

Thanks, everyone! I guess I need to at least start using conditioner. Don't know why I didn't think of that, when I use it myself everyday.

You can buy a product called "Curls Rock". This cuts down on friz. One pump on her wet hair each time she comes out the shower should be fine. The key to styling curly hair is in the cut. If you want to eliminate bulk, have it cut in long layers. It will appear long, but not have so much bulk to it, and it will be easier to manage regarding knots and mats.

Having it all one length is tough to manage with curly hair....not to mention, it can just look raggy and frizzy. Love those layers to add dimension to the curl.

Also important in controlling frizz: don't touch it after the inital (soaking wet) styling and don't rub a towel on her head - use a t-shirt instead.
