AP classes

So my son is only in second grade, but as you know that they start with above grade level math in grade 1. Even
though I thought he should be in above grade I guess I was wrong and he is at grade level math in grade 2.
My question is firstly, how much should I worry about him not being in the above grade level class? does
this effect high school and college admissions eventually. Is there a later grade that we should worry about this
or should I start pushing him now? he is 8.
secondly, he finishes his homework too quickly. I do extra work with him, but he doesn't seem to be challenged
in class.
Any advice on either of these?

Thank you.

Schools are transitioning to Curriculum 2.0, where they no longer have above grade level math. In our school for example, second graders no longer have above grade level math. Are you sure in your school, there is still above grade level math for second graders ?

I don't think the correlation is too high between elementary school and above and beyond college. I was an okay student in elementary and middle school. I started doing better in high school. In college and post-grad. I was probably way better than my friends who were doing a lot better than me in elementary and middle school.

A lot of parents make the mistake of burning their kids out while they are in elementary school. If the kids start disliking the schoolwork, the damage is permanent.

The new curriculum (2.0/EIC) is voluntary in 2nd grade this year, so your school may or may not have "above grade level" math. I would not stress at all, although the fact that you put "AP" in the title of your post about your 2nd grader probably means you'll stress/push no matter what.

No, it doesn't mean he's doomed forever if he isn't above grade level--he is in 2nd grade, he "should" be at 2nd grade level. I know it's MCPS, but this "everyone is honors or there's something wrong" mentality drives me crazy.

Thank you. I am not stressing about it I am new to the public school system so just wanted to know, what it means that's all. He is doing well and I think you are both right, he is at the level he should be at
