PTA - Why do people complain so much about?

I want to join my DC PTA, I don't know much about it, however, I have heard so many negatives reviews about the associations in general, that I am doubting myself. I just want to know what is going on in the school DC are attending and help in within my possibilities. I work full time but have a very flexible schedule so I think I can do it.
