I don't want to claim similarity between US Civil Rights and Palestine. Let me be clear about that, they are two separate movements with their own issues. But the reflexive position of the Editorial Board is strikingly similar to that of eight "sympathetic" white clergymen, who nevertheless urged Dr. King to back down from his campaign of civil disobedience. It is also striking how much fear people have of the nonviolent act of petitioning for statehood. This has the US and Israel scared like nobody's business. The threats are already coming out. Why? The answer for Israel is obvious. But for the US, it forces us to take a stand on one side or the other. We are the veto vote on this one in the UN, what are we going to do? I think the Palestinians should push on it. Either we step up and be the vehicle that brings Israel back to the table, or we deserve to be put in that position. All I hear from WaPo is "wouldn't be prudent". OK, so what is prudent, short of giving up altogether? |
I should have explained that those eight white clergymen gave Dr. King cause to write "Letter from a Birmingham Jail", and then the later book "Why We Can't Wait". |
Cowtows?? |
I think "kowtow" is the word your are looking for. It means to show servile deference. |
Haha, I am usually not guilty of spelling errors. I have never read that word in print. |
I apologize if it's snarky to point out the above typo. |
current system is not sustainable long term this would be a way out US cannot continue to keep supporting Israel financially etc etc long term Vetoing it would be a shame |
The US should vote for statehood, and doing so would ultimately be in Israel's best interest. The Arab Spring was a referendum against US support of dictators in the region. There is much less support for America now. If we veto this, there will be close to none. Why should any Arab country listen to us then? Many of our puppet dictators are gone. If they wanted to wage war against Israel, it's done. Or will we step up with more and more American lives to protect Israel?
Our voting for statehood would force Israel back to the table to negotiate, something it despises. But negotiations seem better to me than obliteration. |
I think the U.S. should not veto this resolution. |
when palestine rejects the terrorists and once to engage in real dialogue with Israel, then that will be the time for votes on statehood. Not now. |
you are living in a then-when world that will never come Are you just trying to support the current solution that obviously is not sustainable long term? |
I want to see a Palestinian state, and I don't want to see a US veto (although I expect to), but what borders will be recognized? |
They did that. In return, the world ignored them. |
"Cow tow" is what you call when your livestock is stuck in the mud.... |
If the U.S. fails to veto, Obama fails to win Florida in 2012.
Congressman Weiner's congressional seat was won by a Catholic Republican in a heavily Jewish District because the Republican held himself out to be a stronger supporter of Israel than the Democrat candidate. The Democrat candidate was Jewish. |
