Are you drowning in paper?

I'm not really an environmentalist at all but even I am astounded at the amount of paper that comes home from MCPS. Along with all the worksheets that DC does everyday, I must receive 5 flyers, the multi page newsletter, reminders for everything. In fact, I have received so many flyers reminding me to buy wrapping paper over the past two weeks that I no longer need wrapping paper. I can just re-use all the flyers.

I understand that not everyone has a computer at home but there should be a paperless opt out function for the parents where we could just view updates to the web, email, or even facebook posts would be fine.

I totally totally agree and think about this everyday as I unload the paper. It is crazy.

I can't stand it. DC went to a Montessori school last year, so no or very limited worksheets. UGH!
Thank goodness at least the newsletter is online.

There's a fair amount of paper but our MCPS is taking steps to put more online (the newsletter) and use email and phone reminders for upcoming events/deadlines once one flyer is sent home.

It is done because just one person out there might not have e mail so they have to include everyone. Instead of opting out of electronic communications, you have to opt in.

The fliers are not from the school, each organization has to provide them to the school, the best idea is to have those outside companies pay an advertising fee to the schools to get access to the students.

At our school we get almost no paper - it's all online. But we are also at a school in a high SES area so access to computers is high. In lower SES areas this is not the case, hence the continued dependence on paper.

There are some players on my DCs travel sports team who do not have regular access to computers. The kids at least have email accounts but the parents don't.

Do you mind saying which school you are in or which cluster? What is SES? Our school is in a very affluent area so computer ownership would be high. I just assumed that there was a rule across MCPS that everything must be sent on paper. We also get tons of flyers from groups offering activities not affiliated with the school and the PTA. I must get at least 10-12 pieces of paper every day.

In our MCPS ES (RM cluster) the principal's newsletter is posted electronically, and if you want a paper copy you have to ask for it in the office. Our PTA allows you opt-in for paperless communications (the default would be to receive paper) which includes the PTA newsletter and any PTA generated flyers or notices. But you still get paper from other outside organizations ( e.g., MSA and i-9 Sports, variarous arts programs, etc. ).

The outside organizations only have certain dates on which they are allowed to provide flyers to schools. Those should not be coming home that frequently.

I second what all the PP's said about the default being paper because thousands of parents in this county do not have computer access at home or work and cannot get communication via email. Also, often some communications are last minute (if there is an incident at school, if a meeting is cancelled, etc) so schools just do a half sheet and give it to everyone.

This made me LOL.

Interesting, I don't get much paper at all for my Kindergartener. I do get tons of recorded phone calls. Presumably I would also get emails, but the school secretaries can't spell 'gmail', so I get none.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

But . . . b/c the school secretaries have an incorrect version of your email, you're not receiving messages? But you would rather NOT take 5 minutes of your time to make the correction?

passive-aggressive?

What is SES?

socio-economic status. "Low SES" is a nice way of saying "poor kids."
