Is that possible? How does out of boundary work in MOCO? We are in Churchill. Are there real differences between the two HS? |
Churchill is a great school. Probably less stressed out as well. |
Teeny difference OP. |
Can you pay to go to Whitman if you live in DC? Are spaces available in a typical year? |
I don't thing you can pay to go there. I've only ever remembered kids going to a different school if their family moved just before senior year, so the kid could stay and graduate with his friends. School that have a magnet program like Blair and Richard Montgomery, will accept out of bout GT students if you apply. |
I'm curious - why would you want to pay to go to the Whitman clluster if you already live in the Churchill cluster? |
Non-residents can, in general, apply to pay to go to Montgomery County schools. (I believe I read that the fee is rising--pretty sure it's between $10,000 and $20,000 a year but don't know precisely.) Not sure about space restrictions at specific schools, though.
No clue about going out of boundary, though, which is more the OP's question. |
The Post had an article about DC families paying to send their kids to MoCo high schools -- particularly BCC. I believe tuition was $13K, and the principal said demand was far higher than capacity. THe article was published in the last six months, if you want to search for it. |
It makes no sense to pay to go to Whitman when you live in the Churchill district. The schools are virtually identical in terms of academic rigor, high-achieving student body, stressed-out and demanding parents (I went to Churchill, so speak from experience), % going to college and % going to Ivies (or equivalent).

If you live outside MoCo, you can pay to get in and you specify for what school(s) you're willing to pay. They decide if they'll take you. If you live in MoCo, you don't pay. You have to apply to transfer into the school and you have to have a reason. Applications are supposed to be in from 2/1-4/1 the previous year but you can apply late, even though it decreases your chances.
If you have a reason (bullying, some sort of family reason, a program one school has that doesn't exist in the other), it is probably worth trying. Be sure to include a letter explaining that reason and expect them to check on it. http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/info/transfer.shtm |
