What have your DC learned the first few weeks of Kindergarden?

Are they supposed to get into counting and reading already? After talking to another K-mom, I am so confused. My DD learned about 4 new songs, but she does know her letters and numbers, according to the other K-mom her DS is doing math and even homework? Is this possible?

The first few weeks of K is mostly getting the kids to learn the rules and routines. The teacher has to spend a lot of time assessing each child so that takes up classtime. It varies from teacher to teacher.

According to my child's K teacher, they spent the first week (three days) learning to stand and move in a line.

According to my child, they aren't learning anything.... they do have story time and play at the stations, but that's pretty much it. I know they are "learning" at the stations, but really, it's not what you would call learning math or reading or science.

They start out very slowly and by the end of the year they learn a few things, but really, IMO, K is a lot of fluff. For my older child, it was a year to mature so that she was ready to do more significant reading/writing in first grade. So, I really don't expect a lot out of K. It's more of a holding pattern. I give my K-er math worksheets/color by number at home and we do a little reading.

Keep your expectations low; add more at home. (This applies to first grade too).

Physics, calculus and advanced Japanese. You must be in the wrong school.

No way! They've only had 8 days of school. I've got three kids in FCPS (grade 3 and below) and none of them have come home with homework. The kindergarteners are still learning the routines. Of course, if you count having to decorate a brown paper bag and put things "about me" in it as homework, well I guess my kids have had homework.

K is a time for social development, not intellectual development

DC have learned rules and songs so far. I am not sure what to expect, waiting for back to school night to find out more.

Teacher here..

1)Have you heard the quote, "Do not believe half of what your child says about school and their teacher, and we will not believe half of what they say about home." (?)

2)It has been less than 2 weeks of school.

3)It is K.

4)If you still have issues in a few weeks, then I recommend speaking to the school. But if it is public, I dod not think there is too much they can do. There is not a whole lot of flexibility there, imo.

Yes it is only two weeks, but how do you explain that to a new K-mom who is so ansious and who thinks her DD is a genious and that the teachers are inepts?

My ds has come home singing quite a few songs. (this thrills me as I am a music teacher) We got a general "optional homework" sheet that lists an activity/question for each day, and asks you to choose 3 per week. Things like, "name 5 foods made from apples" or "have someone read you a story, retell it in your own words". He also said to me the other day "mom, do you know what a grown up word for a diamond is? A rhombus!". He has come home tired and happy, loving school, and wants to go back. This morning (Sunday) he asked with excitement
It is a school day? For me (and him), it is just right so far.

That's it? You are clearly not at a Big 3 ...

20:17 - no lie.

You could not pay me enough to be a teacher in this geographical area and deal with all the whiners. I am referring to the parents, of course. Holy sh*t! talk about over compensating.

OP, talk to "seasoned" moms. They will tell you it is just K, and they are right. Everything is going to be okay.

Anything is possible, however, I think during the first weeks kindergarners are just trying to adjust to the new environment. I don't think they pressure to do any homework yet.
