my head itches...

could i have lice and not know it? I had husband look and he didn't see anything. I have no dandruff flakes. Could it just be cooler/dryer weather?

Bend your head over a dry sink or tub. Scratch your scalp and shake your head and hair vigorously. Then look at what, if anything, falls into the sink/tub. If it is moving, you have lice. If it is skin flakes, you don't.

Just to be safe, treat yourself for lice. You rarely do see anything unless you know what you're looking for.

I would not treat with all those harsh chemicals. Can you get a trusted friend to look for you?

I think the husband would qualify as a trusted friend..

Sounds like an allergic reaction of some kind.

Wash your hair with tee tree oil...if it is lice it will help kill them and if not it will moisturize your scalp!

Does it itch - or does it crazy itch?

If it just itches, it could be a ton of things. Did you recently change hair product? Anything - shampoo, conditioner, styling products? Are you using the hairdryer more often? Are you drinking more caffeine or under a lot of stress? I can get crazy scalp itch if I am stressed and not sleeping.

I agree with the PP who said Tea Tree oil shampoo. Paul Mitchell makes one -- I bought it after a lice infestation. Can't stand the smell, but it will work. Definitely have a female friend look at your head...my husband was useless with the lice. Completely indecisive -- hemming and hawing. Didn't know. Couldn't see. I think they are all like that.

Are you stressed about anything? During a cross country move last year my head itched like crazy and I was convinced that I had lice. I did not have lice, just anxiety.

You know it eventually - we had exposure to lice - our whole family - and not one of us treated for it. And we didn't end up with it either, luckily (already experienced that fun last summer).

I would not use those chemicals unless it was CONFIRMED I had lice, and even then, I think I would try to get it combed out. They are a nuisance (a big one) but not a public health crisis- those chemicals are what's really gross.

23:37 here- Agree on tea tree shampoo- I don't think it will rid you of an existing infestation, but it apparently discourages one. TJ has some good ones for about $4 each.

DS had lice, and I used the cetaphil treatment (just google cetaphil and lice) and it worked like a charm, with no chemicals.

one more thing -- I could NOT see the lice on dc's head. The lice were TINY and the same color as his hair. Not what I expected from looking at pictures on the internet. It was the itching that tipped me off (and then I found the little white nits stuck to his hair).
