Missoni for Target???

Anonymous
Why on earth would anyone in their right mind spend $2,000 on a Missoni dress when something similar is availabe at Target for $50. Isnt the whole point of spending money on "luxury" items is that it gives you some exclusivity - I always figured that this was why designers went after knockoffs so aggressively. I realize that the patterns and overall quality of the target items may be different but still Missoni is Missoni. Do they expect their high end business to survive when Target is selling file folders and pencil holders with Missoni prints?

It's not like anyone can get that Target dress for $50 anyway. All that Missoni stuff is sold out and now on Ebay at 200%+ markup.

It's a limited edition one time thing. Lots of high end designers have already done it without hurting their brand. Same thing with H&M.

Nowadays the model is to build your brand on the runways and make the big bucks in the retail stores. Theorizes are high in the designer market but the dollars aren't there.

I don't even like the stuff.

I would never pay $2,000.00+ for a dress. $50 is pushing it.

Hideous - at $2,000 and at $50

I do like some of the pieces. Many are a bit over the top, but some of the items are really fun! I hope a second shipment comes in.

Going back to OP's original point, I think the Target line creates a completely different -- and non-competing -- market. People who are buying the real stuff are not going to be at all satisfied or impressed with the Target line. (I saw a bunch of pieces in person today, and they're fun but the quality is exactly what you would expect from Target -- not good. Pieces are sewn in a way where the lines don't always match up, glassware and boots have obvious smudges/imperfections etc.)

Basically, the Target line is cute if you like the style and can get your hands on it. But I can't imagine it will dilute the original brand. I could, however, see it having the opposite effect -- turning more people on to the style and encouraging them to take the plunge on a real piece. (Missoni is best worn in moderation anyway! )

I spent $37 for the $29.99 zigzag flats. Cute!
