Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
| Is DS's teacher giving too much homework, or is it taking him too long to complete it? He spent well over an hour most nights the first week of school. I'm curious about others' experiences so far. |
| DD's 5th grade math homework has taken roughly 15 minutes a night |
| OP, what grade is your DC at? my son got home nothing from his 3rd grade AAP school. |
|
DD is in 3rd grade AAP and has brought homework home that consisted of a single page of math. At most the pages took 10 minutes to complete. She also has a monthly project due at the end of the month that should take her less thatn 15 minutes a night to complete.
My dd's AAP class has homework, but some other classes haven't gotten anything yet. They do teach from the same curriculum, so it may be a teacher thing....or the students are getting their homework done in class. |
| It varies by the school, but 3rd grade can actually be tough - with a lot of busy work - because they are not only trying to plow through some mandatory stuff (which they will complete in a few weeks to get through core third grade stuff that might take much longer in GE), but also they are teaching a discipline. 4th grade, a lot easier - used to the drill. 5th grade, a little harder. 6th grade - watch out, the serious stuff is coming. |
| My AAP 3rd grader has a worksheet and another page in a book for math, and then 30+ minutes of reading per night. Started the first day of school. |
| My 3rd grader has spent an hour every night so far doing homework. Plus reading. |
|
OP, do you have a gauge or are you just being nosy to play know it all amongst the non AAP parents? Yuck.
|
Huh? Can you restate this again? What are you trying to ask the OP? Your sentence makes no sense. Yuck indeed. |
Is he a daydreamer, or the kind of kid who focuses too much on the details/perfectionist? My child is one of those, and 30 minutes of homework can take 1-2 hours when he gets in that mode. We are new to a 4th grade AAP class, and the homework appears to be below or at the amount I anticipated moving in from another district. |
| This has been a good thread. I hear some parents say that they won't put their kids in AAP if they are accepted because they are afraid that they would get buried in homework. That's a myth that is being dispelled by the people on this thread. Very helpful. Thank you. |
| My child had no HW until this week, which is mostly thinking problems and creative activities. My older child had more HW in GE the first week than we have seen in 3 weeks of AAP. |
| Okay, I can't not ask anymore. What in the world is AAP? |
