| Maternity diet calls for brown rice. Tried to make it last week for the first time, and it was too mushy. I'd like it to be a little sticky. Any recommendations? What is your secret dear Brown Rice masters? |
|
if you like it sticky, don't rinse it before cooking. If it was too mushy, you probably used too much liquid.
My mom would saute in butter before slowly adding chicken broth and simmering. Like risotto, but not quite as much work. I happen to love my rice cooker. |
| I use chicken broth instead of water, 1 tablespoon of butter and 1/2 teaspoon of salt for 1 cup of rice. |
| Op here-thanks for the tips! Do you still simmer it for 50 minutes or less time? |
how much broth do you use for one cup of brown rice? |

1. Trader Joe's basmati brown rice is the best I've found
2. Cook the rice like you would pasta - I saw these directions on a bag of Mahatma brown rice, and have never been disappointed in brown rice again - boil the water, add the rice, and boil for 30 minutes. Strain. Add salt and other stuff. |
I use 2 cups of water. |
| frozen brown rice from trader joes or whole foods is great in a pinch. |
I agree! This is what I use. Delicious in 3 minutes. |
| OP Here, thanks for all the great posts and ideas! I appreciate it! |
| I lightly toast the brown rice and a little onions and garlic in olive oil, then I add 2 1/4 cups of chicken broth (or other broth) per cup of rice. Bring to a boil and reduce to simmer. Cover tightly and simmer for 50 minutes. I then add a little sea salt to tast. |
| traders also has brown rice in plastic that you put in microwave for one minute. it says to just do that. i usually add some water and do a second minute. very good 2 minute brown rice. never cook it anymore.... |
