I have to slice up apples for my dd because she has weak front baby teeth. Now that she's in school, I'd like to add some fruit to her snacks. What can I use to prevent the apples from turning brown that won't be too sour? |
| Squeeze lemon or lime juice on them. If she doesn't like the taste (my kids love it), try dunking slices briefly in pineapple or orange juice. I haven't tried the latter but it might work. |
| Another trick is to squeeze lemon juice into a cup of water, and give the apple slices a quick bath in there after you slice them. |
I do thisall the time but with orange juice. It works, and there is no sour taste to the apples. However, a lot of times I don't even bother. If you put the apple slices in a ziplock, they don't turn all that brown, and they taste fine, as long as your kid doesn't mind that they're a little brown. Another trick is to use one of those apple slicers that slices the whole apple & takes out the core - sometimes I do that and put the apple back together, including the core and wrap in a piece of plastic wrap. If all the slices are touching and not exposed to air, it doesn't turn brown and your child can just unwrap, eat the slices, and throw the core away. |
I use pineapple juice on all of our "exposed" fruit that goes in lunches or snack bags. It seems to work. |
I do this for my son, whose orthodontia requires that I peel/slice apples before putting them in the lunchbox. After, I sprinkle them with cinnamon/sugar, so that any brown spots are disguised. |
| dip in salt water and rinse. |
| no need to squeeze a fresh lemon. add a couple drops from one of those squeeze bottles to sliced apples in a ziploc and rub/shake the slices so the droplets hit the flesh. |
I do this. I add a minimal amount of salt (a tiny shake) to a small bowl of water, and it works perfectly. Doesn't affect the taste, in my opinion. |
| There are also pre-sliced packages of green and red apples at Giant -- sold out a lot of the time, but if you find yourself in a crunch to get out the door in a hurry, they come in handy. |
| I buy the presliced ones from Safeway. |

What does Giant to to keep the apples from turning brown? |
I have the same question. I buy the sliced apples in the bags for convenience, but HATE out expensive they are. At home, I let my daughter dip her apples in orange juice. Makes a mess, but it prevents the browning. |
| Does your DD really care if the apples are a bit brown? My kids are 2 and 4 and still eat over ripe bananas and "brown" apples and don't know to be grossed out by them. |
