How much is/was your DC unemployment payment?

Anonymous
Wondering what I might get if I get laid off and have to apply for unemployment in DC. The website says payments range from $25 to $300 a week, depending on salary, but I couldn't find anything that says what the corresponding salary range is. I make $45k a year. Do they look only at salary, or also at living expenses and other sources of income (like spouse's salary)? Again, I couldn't find this info on the website, so would appreciate the BTDT perspective.

I was making about what you are and I receive $324/month. It will be more or less this depending on how many deductions you take. They only look at salary.

Is your job in DC, or in MD or VA? Unemployment insurance is handled by the state where you last worked, rather than where you live.

$324 a month sounds really low. When I worked in Md I received$ 380 a week, and I made 36k

Live and work in DC. $300 and change a month is pretty scary to contemplate. Not only that, but if I hear one more person bitch about how all us slackers on unemployment are sucking the system dry, I might scream. 12% of my former monthly income? Yeah, that's worth it. *sigh*

You'd be surprised. I think it's even less in VA.

Looks like the current maximum amount one can collect in DC per week is around $359 (as of March 2011).

Right, but what does that mean? Would I, at $45k, be eligible for the maximum? PP who got $324 PER MONTH seems to suggest that no, I'd be getting a quarter of that.

I'm pretty sure that the PP who quoted 324/month meant to say 324/week.

Don't forget that unemployment income is taxable, and be sure to fill out the proper withholding form. Otherwise you will be stuck with a big tax bill early next year!

The tax is pretty low--5% DC income, 10% Federal income. I'm not bothering with witholding--I'll take it as an interest-free loan.

I was making $52K and I get $307/week after they withhold the taxes. I'm having the taxes withheld bc DH works some freelance jobs that we have to put $ aside for in taxes and I can't handle thinking about doing it for the unemployment as well. I will say I am amazed at how easy the whole process has been. I am discouraged at how many people seem to be applying for the same handful of jobs.
