Young Scholars

My daughter came home with a letter yesterday asking permission for her to participate in this program. I haven't heard anything about this program before so I'm not too sure what to make of it, except that it seems to be a good thing. Anyone have a child that participated in this?

[list]I have not had a child in the program but it is a good thing. This means your child has been identified as potentially "gifted" and participation will streamline them into the AAP program. Good Luck.

This letter was sent out at the beginning of the school year? Is this typical or do parents get these letters later into the school year?

only the few who're easily identified as gifted; the lesser ones get the letters much later as things progress.

"Young Scholars is a K-8 initiative that is designed to increase the proportion of historically underrepresented students in gifted programs."

Yes. Young Scholars was designed to help minority students with gifted potential develop their abilities.

My son is not a minority/FARM student, either, and was identified and participated in Young Scholars for 1st and 2nd grade. He's now in 6th grade at a GT center.

Yeah, the schools that have YS don't just pull minority kids because that would cause an uproar. But the schools with YS usually have a significant minority population, so they just pull whoever they think would do well in the program and by default some of those kids are minorities.

Young Scholars as a program is not at every FCPS elementary school but all FCPS Advanced Academic Resource Teachers (AARTs) have been trained to identify Young Scholars. So Young Scholars may be identified at all FCPS elementary schools.

So if your school has the "program" than your dc might get the extra enrichment even s/he isn't a minority. If your school does not have the "program", the school will only identify minority students with gifted potential.
