River School vs yu Ying

Which would you choose? We will likely get off yu yin wait list this week. Will have to pay river tuition either way. Commute about the same. For pre-k.

I'm a Yu Ying mom and I love the school. This will be our 3rd year in the school and it has been an excellent match for our kids. I don't know anything about Rivier School though. Good luck in your decision.

If you have to pay the River tuition anyway, I would probably go there. It is a great school, especially at the pre-K level. Really small class size, fantastic teachers, etc. Many kids leave at K and First though for other privates. I had two kids go there for preK and K and it was great for them.
If you are looking for a school to stay at for a while, and don't want to pay tuition for those additional years, maybe Yu Ying is your better choice.

You'll leave Yu Ying by second at the latest. No comparison between the two schools. Stick with River.

NP here. Why? Are you a current or former Yu Ying parent? I am not but interested. Know a parent with a rising third grader who is happy with the school, sending younger sib there top.

The River School is a private school with innovative programs for children with hearing loss. Yu Ying is a public charter school with a bilingual English/Chinese focus. Both great schools, but totally different programs. Which are you looking for? I can't imagine many families making a decision between these two schools.

That's a pretty bold prediction about a school that re-enrolls 96% of its students every year.

I'd say 96% reenrollment is high in the upper grades. Of the 50 1st graders that started in 2010, I've tallied 8 that are not returning for 2nd. 3 moved out of the area. 5 selected other schools. Of the 5, at least 1 had special needs not met at YY. So, that's an 86% re-enrollment rate, assuming everyone else turns up tomorrow. . . .

The attrition rate is higher in the upper grades, but those are the years where the school has less experience. For someone starting preK in 2011, I would think all the elementary school grades would be pretty strong.

Op here - we love thevsmall class size at River. Our child does not have adhering loss so notnthere for that reason. School has great teachers. Love the idea of language immersion, especially Chinese. Incrdibly torn.

If you've already paid River tuition, why not "visit" Yu Ying for a few days and then decide?

96% is a made up number.

I'm pretty sure 96% is what I heard at a Yu Ying open house this spring, too. I have no way of knowing if it's accurate, but I don't think it's made up out of whole cloth.

Parent of a Yu Ying pker here. My DC loves it! Never been to school or daycare but seems very happy even though it's all in Chinese (we don't know/speak Chinese). It's only the second day but we're thrilled that DC is going here. HTHs!
