Peach 1st Birthday Cake

Anonymous
Ok, I need help. For whatever reason I insisted that my first kid did not have any real sugar for her first year. So she had this strange looking applesauce 1st birthday cake. (The frosting did have some sugar in it) Of course our nanny and friends thought that was silly (and it was) so gave her a real birthday cake at a 2nd party. She loved - and did the whole messy face thing - both cakes.

Now it's time for my second child's first birthday cake. She also has not had any sugar so far, but i've come a long way & realize that a birthday cake is not the end of the world.

Do I make her a low-sugar cake to follow in her beloved big sister's footsteps (and address any potential guilt trips I'm gonna get down the road -- you let dd2 have a real cake!) or do i just do a normal cake and let her have at it? She's not going to get a 2nd cake.....

She adores peaches, eats 2-3 of them a day, so I'd love to make her a peach birthday cake. So any receipes (either sugar free or not) are appreciated, as well as feedback on my craziness!!

Normal cake!!

smittenkitchen.com has a recipe for peach cupcakes (with brown sugar frosting) that I've tried. They didn't have a powerful peach taste, however. Maybe try a regular vanilla cake with peach filling or add a peach flavoring to the frosting.

Who is gonna guilt trip you? DD1? She will not remember. This is what infant amnesia is for.

try making very thin layers of white cake and use peach preserves or pureed peaches [maybe mixed with banana] between the layers. Same principle as the jelly roll:

It's my own insantiy i know....but imagine 20 years down the road, one kid is at Harvard, the other in jail, i'll stay up nights wondering what happened, and ti'll all come down to their first birthday cakes

Then you will make a no-sugar birthday cake with a shiv inside, and give it to your jailbird, who will escape and make a whole new life in the Caribbean with a hidden fortune which will fund your retirement.

Obvs.

TRUST me, as the mom of two adult kids, there will be many things for which you can feel guilt! So just go ahead and serve the sugar cake!

WHICH lady?!

The one who's so insane about not giving her kids sugar.

I mean yes of course you should limit it, but the fact that she's obsessing about it is really weird.

Would it work fo substitute the water in the recipe (boxed vanilla cake mix) for nectar from a can of peaches? I have substituted butter for the oil with good results.

Crazy OP back (yes, I completely know that I am certifable! ). I made DC a normal, sugar-filled, peach cake. And she didnt' even like it! I dont know if it was because he didnt know what to do - having no experience with cake - or because she wasn't in the mood, but he tried some of the frosting and then reached to be picked up!

She then proceeded to eat a birthday peach

So now I can stop worrying about the impact of differential treatment of my kids; at least in terms of birthday cakes....as pp pointed out, I have a lifetime of this yet to come

You're very funny, crazy OP. I like this thread.

I think many of us worry about little things that we know are ridiculous. As long as you can admit to yourself that it's silly, you (and your sugarless daughter and your sugar filled daughter) will be fine!
