Maternity coverage not option in DC health insurance

Anonymous
Any advice for DC resident that has the Blue Cross Blue Shield Insurance open enrollment offered to DC residents, which is great insurance but does not cover any of my maternity care at all!!!!!

$450 per month but no maternity options at all.

One income household, both parents students, family of 3.

Any hospitals or programs recommendations?

Thank you!

Would you consider using a midwife and going for a home birth? I found that the MAMAS midwives and Birthcare (which has an option for the same price to deliver in their birth center) to be much more reasonably priced. You always run the risk of transfer to the hospital, of course, which would substantially increase the cost, but at least the base cost is much less. Good luck. Sorry to hear about the lack of maternity coverage.

if your income is on the low side, you may qualify for DC Alliance/Chartered Health Care.

The Family health and birth center may be a more affordable option for prenatal care and delivery. You could also maybe talk to Mary's Center about affordable prenatal care options.

I'm not familiar with the particular plan you're talking about, but DH and I were looking for insurance to purchase ourselves when neither of us had it through employers. We looked on ehealthinsurance.com, and most of the options had a maternity benefit as an add-on for around $125-150/month (in addition to the premium for the plan, which for us was looking to be about $300/month). I would check that out, unless there's some reason you know you wouldn't qualify for a private plan.
