And this is how the GOP Screws Itself

Romney, in Shift, to Court Tea Party

For months, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's 2012 campaign plan couldn't have been simpler: Raise money, stay above the fray, watch his Republican opponents duke it out on the right, and hammer the incumbent president as through it were already the general election.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry has complicated all that.

Now Romney has to get off his Romney 3.0 "I'm a Businessman Ready to Fix the Economy" campaign, and go back to his 2008 Romney 2.0 "I'm the True Conservative" campaign. This will screw him up because he won't be able to claw his way back to the center by the time the general election comes around. His head is going to explode, keeping up with his reversals.

we need a true conservative. Reagan was the last one to be truly conservative. Bush 1 and Bush 2 resented Reagan and were much squishier raising taxes after promising not to and Bush 2 being a big spender. Perry is not backing down on conservative philosophy. Romney is a moderate conservative (like Bush). Perry will win. A winnable percentage of the country is HUNGRY for a return to full blast Reaganism. People want to be proud of America again

Your hero Reagan's deficits, as a percentage of GNP, were worse than Bush II's. Plus, he gave away to the rich (aka "privatized") huge amounts of federal property. He's the iconic don't-tax-and-still-spend Rep.

Unlike Bush II, at least he achieved some growth with his wildly irresponsible fiscal policies, though not nearly enough to justify them. And his messes were far easier to clean up.

Except that Reagan increased taxes in order to fix the budget. And obviously you don't know Perry's view on immigration, or Reagan's.

A minority of the country is true conservatives. If you think you can win without the center, I wholeheartedly encourage you to pursue it.

Are true conservatives more, or less common than true Scotsmen?

Uh-huh. If Reagan was running for the nomination right now, esposing the views and policies he implemented when he was president, he'd be one of the least conswervative candidates in the race, if not THE least conservative. Ironic that the paragon of conservative values would be far to liberal to win the nomination today, 30 years later. And by ironic, I mean shit-stopping terrifying.

Reagan would not get the tea party vote because he would not take any of these ridiculous pledges, he would not support the immigration policy that many of them want, he would compromise on taxes, he would be shot down for the earned income tax credit, which was his version of Republican welfare and is the cause of the complaint that so few lower income people pay income taxes.

Perry is the most Reaganesque and will defeat Obama if nominated. The U.S. needs to get back to being #1, this loser Obama crap has run it's course.

Well, there's a carefully crafted rebuttal. The rest of y'all can just STFU now.
