ASD and Losing Teeth

Anonymous
My 6.5 YO ASD son lost his first tooth today. I had always wondered how this would work. DS is extremely behind conversationally, so I knew it would be difficult to help him understand what was happening with his tooth and why it was getting more and more loose, let alone that fact that he'd have to eventually wiggle it out. Every day he let me wiggle it to see it's progress and he'd get agitated with me eventually. He wouldn't wiggle it himself though. He always left it alone.

Today it was so wiggly, I just popped it out. He seemed quite pleased that it was out and was excited to go look in a mirror to see what it looked like.

Anyone else have any stories to share about how it worked with their special needs child? I'd love to hear.

My son crunched up and swallowed his first lost tooth! He was eating ice cream and exclaimed "Mom, This ice cream is so crunchy...why is it so crunchy?" I knew exactly why. Unfortunately no sign of tooth. We took a pic of the gap in his mouth and emailed the tooth fairy.

Both of these posts are encouraging! My 5 yo has not yet lost her first tooth, but her brother starting losing his at around 5 years so now we're on the lookout. Every few days we "check for wiggly teeth", and we've tried to show her our son's gaps. It sounds like it won't be so traumatic!

I have a nonverbal child and I've heard a lot of stories about loose teeth being swallowed. Doesn't appear to do damage.
