authentic Chinese

Anonymous
My husband keeps talking about old-school Chinese places where "some old lady is pushing around a cart" offering food (he is Cantonese, first generation). I have no idea what sort of places do this as I have only been to "American" Chinese.

Any suggestions? Would prefer the NoVA area but we will go to DC or MD too.

I am assuming he means Dim Sum. I've been to Good Fortune & Hollywood East in Wheaton--both good.

Here are some others:

Yup, he's talking about dim sum.

Mark Duck House in NoVA has great dim sum on weekends (get there early bc every Chinese in the area shows up for it). Sishuan Pavilion in Rockville is also very authentic. We have visited more chinese restaurants in the area than you can imagine and those are by far the best two.

12:40 PP - are there any other decent Chinese places in Nova? Doesn't have to have dim sum, just good takeout. A friend of mine says there's no good Chinese in the area. I've told her she needs to go to MD for good Chinese, but I'm hoping I'm wrong. Chinese is just about my least favorite cuisine (except Japanese), so I really can't help her at all.

Not PP, but I can highly highly recommend Peking Duck Gourmet, in Falls Church. It also gets ridiculously crowded, but it is worth the wait. Definitely not "fast food" chinese, and if you do take-out, you can beat the crowds!

Fortune is good and less wait than Mark's duck house. They are across the street from each other and both tasty.

A&J is Taiwanese dim sum. It's very good, but may not be what OP is looking for.

My husband likes A&J but their dim sum does not taste like the dim sum I am used to eating.

A&J is good, but it is taiwanese. Unless that's what your husband wants, go with Mark's Duck House (for dim sum or eat in) or TemptAsian (eat in). My favorite dim sum in the area is Hollywood East in Wheaton. We pilgrimage up there frequently.

If your husband likes spicy foods, check out Hong Kong Palace (near dogfish head brewery). It's amazing.
