We just started my middle school DS on Vyvanse 20 mg. for mild-moderate ADD. He took it for 3 days last week and then today, the first day of school. He became extremely moody and angry this evening, lashing out, being mad about past injustices (perceived or real, probably a combination, but they feel real to him). I am thinking this is a side effect of the wearing off of the medication. Will this type of reaction get better over time? I cannot imagine going through this every evening.
Any feedback appreciated. |
Yes, we found that the after effects wear off with time. Also, given your son's age, once he adjusts to medication, he should be able to take some responsibility for self control.
One warning. My DS had to stop medication for a few weeks and we just restarted this week. We are going through the adjustment all over again like he had never taken the medication. For this reason, I doubt we'll ever consider weekend or summer holidays from meds. |
Our DS, 8, also takes 20 mg of Vyvanse. The good thing that we found about it, versus other shorter-acting stimulants he's taken, is that it much easier to deal with the effects of rebound in the evening -- it's off to bed early sometimes, LOL. Seriously, for us the rebound used to take place right when he got home from school, with homework etc. still to deal with.
The other thing you can consider is trying Intuniv in the evening -- DS also takes this. It helps with some of the impulsivity of ADHD symptoms (DS is primarily inattentive but still has some impulse issues) and reactivity. Good luck! |
OP here, thanks for the responses. I am hoping things will be better this evening. Thank-you, thank-you. |
