My friend will be sending her DS to school next week for the first time. He has ASD and is nonverbal, and she is worried that he cannot say his name/address/etc if asked. Does anyone have any recommendations for an ID tag or bracelet or something that they use for their children? If it's hard to take off, all the better.
Thanks. |
If he's nonverbal, it's more than likely that he has an IEP. They don't tend to let these kids wander by themselves at all. They are guided from class to class and are escorted to onto the bus. My son is verbal, but will not answer questions very well. I don't worry about him at all in the schools because he is looked after very closely. I can understand her anxiety about sending her child to school for the first time, but I think after a few days, she will calm down and be more comfortable with the level of supervision provided our special needs children. |
I agree with the PP that our SN kids are safe in school . My child is never left alone.
However, I can understand her wanting some extra insurance and I have seen these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Child-Safety-ID-Shoe-Tag-Alzheimers-Kid-Special-Needs-/320730378854?pt=AU_Medical_Special_Needs&hash=item4aad053266 |
I'm sure he'll be fine in school.
They do have ID bracelets as long as he's comfortable with something around his wrist. Something like these: http://stores.vitalids.com/StoreFront.bok |
Thanks all. The reassurance that he'll be well looked after is helpful. I mean, she feels good about the school, but is still a nervous mom, sending the little one off to school for the first time. I can certainly understand that part ![]() |
When I was planning to take my ASD son to an amusement park for the first time, I went to PetSmart and had a laser ID tag made with his name and my cell phone number. I threaded it through his shoelace so it would be easily seen if he got lost. It was cheap and very easy to do at the little machine near the front of the store. I went to the one across from Springfield Mall. |
I have a medic alert bracelet for my DS. It doesn't say that he is autistic, ( it does say he has a medication allergy) but it does say to call immediAtely for info. I have it set so that the medic alert people will tell whomever calls that he has ASD And maybe nonverbal. MA gives the caller my info but also calls me directly so I know there is an issue. It's $35 a year and I think it's worth every penny. |
Mabels Labels sells packs of wrist bans like the ones you get when going to the fair or amusement park. They are impossible for little kids to get off. You can have whatever you want printed on them and buy a big pack. You can replace it every 3 or 4 days with a fresh one. They are pretty cheap.
