designer sunglasses

Are they worth it? I have a cheap pair from Target that seems to do the job, but now I'm thinking about upgrading. I wandered into Sunglass hut at the mall and most were around $150-300. I don't even know what to look for when shopping for sunglasses.

Designer, or good sunglasses?

I don't know if the fashion brands have all the feature that you really should have to protect your eyes. You want polarized, 100% UV, and larger lenses=more protection. You can usually find online prices that are better than the mall once you know what you want.

There was a recent thread, search on Maui Jim, several posters recommended them.

I got some nice Cole Haan ones at Nordstrom Rack for $25.

I think I either heard on NPR or read somewhere within the last 6 months that most designer sunglasses are no better than ones that are more moderately priced. I know that a $150 pair of Ralph Lauren sunglasses are made by the same company as a $450 pair of Prada glasses. Interestingly, the frames are very similar, just different colors. That same company also makes Ray Bans, and numerous other designer names. I believe they said as long as you have UV protection, you are good.

I wouldn't go by what PP thinks she heard somewhere. And even if they are made by the same manufacturer, that doesn't mean they're made to the same standards.
