What non-perishable items are you buying?

I'm at a loss. All I can think of is peanut butter, tuna, fruit, and powdered milk - yuck but with a 2 & 4 YO, seems like something we should have. Of course we have the requisite snacks, graham crackers, cheddar bunnies, animal crackers, etc. Need some ideas.

Fortified cereal, non-perishable milk in cartons, nuts. Wipes, TP, paper towels, diapers (if you still use them), bottled water. Flashlights, batteries.

Do your laundry, run the dishwasher, and bathe the kids before the storm hits.

Fully charge cell-phones.

Clear gutters.

Secure objects on the front porch, patio, deck, etc.

Emergency Food Pantry List
We all need protein, carbohydrates and fats to keep up our energy, so be sure to store nonperishable foods that will meet these requirements:

Dried meats. Beef jerky or beef sticks are good sources of long-storing protein.
Canned fish and meat. Canned tuna is an excellent source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids. Canned ham and sandwich spreads can be eaten with crackers. Canned beans are an excellent source of vegetarian nutrition.
Canned fruits. Peaches, pears, berries and applesauce are good sources of vitamin C and other nutrients.
Canned vegetables. Vegetables, such as beans, peas, carrots and so on are important.
Dried fruits. Dried fruits, such as raisins, are another way to get the nutrition of fruit in your emergency food pantry.
Whole grain crackers. These are good replacements for bread.
Nuts. Almonds, walnuts, cashews and pecans have protein, fiber and healthful fats.
Granola bars. These are good for sweet treats.
Dry cereals. They are fortified with extra vitamins and minerals and can be eaten dry.
Juice boxes. Single-serving-sized juice that doesn't need to be refrigerated is helpful. Make sure to choose 100% fruit juices.
Electrolyte drinks. Drinks, such as Gatorade or Powerade, are a good addition to your emergency food pantry.
Water. In case your regular water supply becomes contaminated, store several bottles of water in your emergency pantry.
Multivitamins. A bottle of multivitamins can help supply any missing nutrients.
Can opener. You need to have a can opener or church key opener that stays in your emergency food pantry.
Large containers. Keep bags, backpacks or other large containers close by. In the event you have to get out of your house in a hurry, you do not want to have to hunt for a bag to carry your food.
Stove. A camping stove or small grill may be used in a safe area to heat foods.

Take empty plastic juice and soda bottles (NOT milk), clean them, and fill them not quite to the top with clean drinking water. Pack your freezer with these.

Also you can put almost full plastic bottles of juice in the freezer. It will serve the same purpose. Or buy some bottled water, empty them a little bit, and freeze those.

They will help keep your freezer cold longer if your power goes out or you can use them ina cooler. Plus you will have cold, clean drinking water.

I'm not stocking anything special for the kids. Spaghetti, pasta, noodles. We have a gas stove so I can always boil water. We have a couple hunks of cheddar cheese that will keep a few days in a cooler I'm sure. So we can make mac n cheese. I put the butter and milk in the freezer, too, so we'll have that for a few days.

I do have a French Press so we can make coffee even with no electricity. that's a big deal.

Snack foods. Lots of snack foods for the apocalypse!

Also that list someone posted earlier is great for long term food storage, but since you know this is going to hit this weekend you don't have to get things like canned peaches that last for months unless you like canned fruit. Apples will last fine for a week. Probably peaches would, too if they were in season anymore. A melon or a bunch of banans will last fine for a few days on your counter, and so on. Just get food you can cook over a gas stove (if you have one).

If you have electric stove, I recommend at some point getting a camp stove. Or some cans of EcoFuel. I love those!

They go in ALL of our flash lights. I just checked last night and started laughing bc I had A's and C'd but did not think to buy D's. I do not know if anyone on DCUm listens to Elliot in the Morning (101.1) but Diane's husband bought 50 D batteries and they were making fun of her but most flashlights and lanterns use D's.

Apparently some areas are all sold out of the D's now. I just think its somewhat funny since you do not really think about battery size often when buying them for flashlights and things.

DH just got back from five different stores (Giant, Safeway, Home Depot, Target, and Wal-Mart) and they are all out of D batteries.

Also if you get this...try the mom and pop grocery stores. My mom was just at Chevy Chase Supermarket and she said they had lots of D batteries if you are in MD! Goodluck!

Thanks! Heading out now.
