Would you like to have school year starting after the Labor Day?

Virginia has wonderful school year law, they don't start untill after Labor Day.
We can't Maryland have the same law and if there would be an optio
would you opt for it or against?

Absolutely AGAINST it. Just look at FFX co - they get out around June 23 each year.

My mother was a teacher for 30 years in NC (grades 1-8). We always started about 10 days before Labor Day. She said the first week or so was "all wiggles" with the kids, but at the Labor Day holiday, the kids would calm down and get serious about learning.

I'd much rather start the week before Labor Day and get out around June 15, than the day after Labor Day and go until June 20-something. My kids go into "summer mode" before Memorial Day. I can't see extending the school year later into June and still staying sane.

PG County and DCPS started on 8/22!

The counties in MD set their dates. In Wicomico county on the eastern shore, school started after labor day and ended first week of June. We didn't have lengthy breaks - no week long spring break. Not sure what it's like now but it was great then.

I wish it did. I always feel like my summer vacation is cut short when we have to return before Labor Day

Who knows, you may get your wish this year!

But no, I don't wish we started after Labor Day. I've heard of some school districts staring the Wednesday before LD so kids have 3 days that week. Then LD week they go 4 days and then 5 days. That makes sense to me and seems like a good transition into school.

Mo co used to start before Labor Day. Then, former superintendent Jerry Weast decided he wanted the kids to have more days of instruction before taking MSA's in May. Yes, that was the rationale at the time. Most teachers and parents were adamantly opposed, but it didn't matter. For the next couple of years, school started on Thurs., then Wed., then finally on Monday the week before LD. My DC was in the early grades then so it was easier to keep him out and continue our annual trek to visit family on the west coast over LD. By the time the start date was moved to Monday, it was too much school to miss.

I'd love year-round schools. I know people whose kids are in it and they love it. No summer slump. Yet the kids/families still get decent breaks during the year (even a 4-6 weeks off in summer), but nothing like 10 weeks off.

Also, not all of VA starts after Labor Day. Loudoun County starts on Monday.

Yes.

Yes Yes Yes. Labor Day is the unofficial end of summer. Why start school before then.

This is how they did it when I was growing up in NY.

I'm in Fairfax County and I wish we started the week before Labor Day so we could get out earlier in the summer.

I'd like a summer vacation of about 6-7 weeks and then have the other time breaking up the school year - take 10 days at Thanksgiving, 2 weeks at Christmas, a week sometime off-season for travel, etc.

With the exception of your description of Thanksgiving, this is very close to how year-round schooling is done. I've seen it where kids start in mid July, finish at end of May, have about a month around Christmas. 6-8 weeks at summer. a couple of weeks in the spring. There is no summer slump. The parents love it.

Honestly, with MoCo's religious diversity, I don't see it ever happening.
