Elementary schools near Penn Quarter?

Anonymous
Hi all,

We are relatively new to the area and planning ahead.

What good public elementary schools are closest to Penn Quarter?

Thanks

Will you be living in one of the new condos?

I work around there. No schools in the area as far as I can tell. I'd be weary of the actualy assigned school. The best public and private schools will be in upper NW.

Thompson Elementary at 12th & L. I have heard good things about it but have not been there myself.

I would ignore this type of comment. The person does not live in your neighborhood and doesn't really know the neighborhood.

Do your research and you will find that there are good schools in areas not far from Penn Quarter - Thompson is one.

The best of everything is in upper NW. But not all of us can afford to live there, choose to live there, or could even fit there. PP, please try not to dismiss downtown out of hand like that.

We live in that area and are planning on moving to Upper Northwest or Lower Mongomery County, MD next year specifically because there are no good schools near Penn Quarter.

Penn Quarter is one of DC's most promising neighborhoods, of course. The thing is, it hasn't caught on with families who have school-age children. So the immediate neighborhood doesn't have things like playgrounds or schools that most discerning families would accept. This most likely throws OP into the out-of boundary/ charter market, like many other DC families.

If we can somehow make a firm pact to draw a critical mass of families to PQ and arrange appropriate services, please count me in!

I used to work there too, and my agency had a relationship to the closest school to us--Walker Jones. I tutored there one day a week during my lunch hour for a few years and it was abysmal. Not sure if things have changed in the last 4 years, but I wouldn't send my kid to school there. If you're in the eastern part of Penn Quarter, that could be your assigned school--look at the DCPS website.

There is a charter school at Thomas Circle. Again, Tompson Elementary at 12th and L is supposed to be good and they have a Chinese program - beautiful school, newly renovated. These are not at Penn Quarter, but not too far away and an easy walk from McPherson Sq. Metro.
