redness around bad mosquito bite

Anonymous
I'm going to call the doc in the morning but wanted to know if anyone has experienced this... 3 yo DS has a big welt on his leg where he was bitten by a mosquito yesterday. What concerns me is redness spreading across his shin around the bite. He's never had a bite like this and I'm worried about infection. Thanks.

I get large red welts when I am bitten by Asian Tiger Mosquitos. However, the red welts usually are gone by the next morning.

Good idea to check with the doctor. Are you sure it's a mosquito bite? Is the red area growing warm? I ask because I had a bout with MRSA a few years back and it showed up as big red welts on my legs. They were intitially misdiagnosed as spider bites but turned out to be symptoms of a staph infection. It was all cleared up with the right antibiotics, but if it is MRSA, you want to get on it quickly before it gets worse.

Good luck -- hopefully it's not MRSA and will go away on its own.

DS had this last year, and the Dr. said it was not cellulitis (which is in fact a possibility with stings or bites), and she prescribed some bactoban (SP?) antibiotic ointment just in case there was some other localized infection.

Ask for some bactroban tomorrow -- it's great to have on hand.

The Asian Tiger mosquitoes are killers. My DD will be a little red, at first. I use benedryl spray or cream, but they still wind up become huge, scarring, welts.
If your son was bitten during the day, it is probably the Asian Mosquito, as they are out all day long, and don't seem deterred by Off!.
