Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)

New to FC, just transfered in. How difficult is it to get approval to transfer a younger sibling into the same school as the older sibling? If you moved into the district over the summer and went through this already as a late application, how long does the process take? (Working under the assumption that the center school is still green lighted for transfer students.)
We had considered leaving the younger sibling at the home school, but see now that all the important early events (Open House, Back to School Night) are on the exact same day/time at the 2 different schools. Moving is so traumatic for the kids and they are always so nervous when we start a new school. We don't want to make them feel like I am choosing one over the other for their important events and we want their first steps into the new school(s) to be as relaxing and positive as possible. |

How about LOOKING UP your AAP center on the FCPS website to see if its even open to transfers, rather than wasting all of our time asking hypothetical questions.
Most AAP centers aren't open to transfers because everyone else with younger children thought of transfers back in May when their AAP center-eligible child was accepted into the program. Our center has been closed to transfers for years. However, there might be that ONE center that is open....but how would you know unless you've actually gone on the FCPS site and checked for yourself? As for how long it takes to get a transfer school....that depends on the school. How about making a phone call and contacting the school? |
| Welcome to town. We're a friendly bunch here. |
|
If the OP took the time to check availability and call her center before posting here I'm sure the response she got would have been more friendly. Asking hypotheticals without doing any research yourself is not going to get you a friendly response.
If the OP asked if anyone transferred a child to an AAP center this close to the start of the school year and how long it took....that would warrant a friendly response. There are parents on this board who have the problem with a two children split between schools due to AAP. If the OP asks us how do we manage our kids schedules...she would get lots of friendly, helpfull advice. So, OP, let us know how you did with checking the website and calling your school. |
| To answer the OP's question....it would be US going to the website, checking all of the AAP centers if they were green to transfers, and then calling the green ones to ask how long it would take to transfer a child thre. It would be much better for all if the OP just did that herself. |
| I believe the OP's question was answered. How long would it take for a green lighted school to accept a transfer of a younger sibling? Answer: Depends on the school. The ball is in the OP's court. |

Wow! If it wastes your time, don't read it.
We just moved to FC last week, applied immediately upon arrival and just got accepted to the program yesterday. When you transfer in from another state you must hand carry and deliver your application in person. There is no option to apply in advance by mail, email or fax, or we would have done it last spring. I already talked to the school, looked online and know the availability. I was just interested in some real-life experience from anyone who has gone through a similar process. Mentorship by those who have gone before you is a very helpful process when you move frequently. From your response I imagine you haven't come in as a late transfer, or your tone would have been much more helpful and much less rude. 10:30, thanks for the welcome

| OP, I really don't think it matters what the website says because this is all at the principal's discretion. I would call and ask about possible spaces. Just because the school itself is over capacity does not mean that every grade and classroom is. I know at our base school, some grades have bulging classrooms (30+ kids) and some are much smaller (21-22 kids per class). So I would call and ask. |

Thanks to those of you with helpful responses, especially 10:57.
FC has a much more complex process than any of the other 3 elementary schools we have attended in the past 4 years, so I do appreciate any insight that helps make our latest transition easier for my kids. With only 2 weeks until the start of school we are working overtime to try to get all the boxes checked so they can have a positive start to their next school experience. If there is anyone on this board that came into the district as a late transfer, I would love to hear your experience. Thanks! |

Wow! It would have been nice if you started off by telling us that you looked up the school, and called the school to talk about a transfer.
Its irrelevant that you transfered to FCPS late. No matter when you decide to transfer your younger child you would still have to check the FCPS website and talk to your AAP center and have that information available to us. It would even be nice if you told us what your school WAS. No AAP center is the same. |
| Wow someone is in a crappy mood today yet they took the time to respond! Wow how blessed we are. And the comment about Wasting our time.... its YOUR time! Totally up to YOU to read or respond! I personally found this post somewhat helpful being an out of towner currently involved in a move to FC. Perhaps the OP is from out of state and is just getting the hang of things or was just looking for that extra bit of info to make her stressful situation(a move with two children) a little less frustrating. |
|
I think its hard to give you detailed info/help without knowing the school. I would go to the AAP school office in person and beg. You say the school is definitely open to transfers? That should help.
But if a school is full or over-crowded, I doubt you will have much luck.(Unless you've lined up an after-school baby-sitter in the AAP school's zone. That would help.) |
| I didn't think responding harshly to the OP was wasting my time. I just didn't want to waste my time researching the subject for her. Had she posted that she had looked up her school and talked to them and asked for other's experiences in transferring younger sibs to an AAP center, or asked how to juggle two children's activities in separate schools, I would have been all over that with a smile on my face and joy in my posts. Yes, I was definitely snarky....sorry all. |
| Again the usefulness of this site is truly show by the mean sprited responses... |
| 19:07: spelling and grammar is also useful. |
