FCPS 2nd grade

Anonymous
Can anyone tell me exactly what is taught in 2nd grade? I read the curriculum online, but I need something in plain English. Like, do they learn about dinosaurs, or the planets? What kind of math? Etc.

My apologizes to for sounding dumb, but it's been a long time since I was 7.

I had a child in 2nd this year. Here is what I remember:

Addition, subtraction, how to measure things, units of measurement (quart, gallon, inch, feet, etc), comparing numbers (greater than, less than, etc), basic fractions, graphing

Famous Americans, explorers, Native Americans, geography (continents, oceans, rivers, mountain ranges), scarcity, supply/demand

Solids/liquids/gases, animal and plant life cycles, weather patterns, natural and man-made resources

lots of writing. journals at school. writing poems. writing a short paragraph. reading and recording a few sentences about what they read.

This is nearly exactly the curriculum my child learned last year in 1st in FCPS. I know our school is a "core knowledge" school, so some things they do in a different order than other schools, but the math shouldn't be much different. Hmmm...

My second grader's class finished with addition, subtracting with three digits (grouping, re-ordering). They did rudimentary multiplication--learning about arrays.

They raised crickets and baby chicks.

There is a lot that is reviewed and built upon.

This was when we began to suspect we should take our DC out of FCPS. By grade two it was the same old, same old. Grade 3 got worse because it was the same old, same old coupled with less than stimulating constant SOL prep. We went private for grade 4. While many families did stay, we were by far not the only family who was frustrated with this situation. Even a few very good and enthusiastic teachers left. I wish FCPS would revamp their curriculum, especially at the elementary level.

My kid hasn't been through second yet (just finished first), but the list that PP made about addition, subtraction, measuring, etc., doesn't worry me at all.

Yes, they did "addition" in first grade, but they added single digits. There is still room for growth in second grade to learn how to add two digit and three digit numbers. Same with subtraction. As for measuring and volume, my first grader did not learn about quarts and gallons. So, again, there is room to work on measurements without assuming that they learned all they need to know in first grade. Yes, they did very basic fractions and very basic graphing in first grade, and they did talk about George Washington and Martin Luther King, but there is still room to build on those concepts in second grade.

To say that "they already did all that in first grade" seems silly. Kids need repetition and building on what they know, little by little. If this curriculum process is bothering you, then maybe you should investigate other options. But, I'm pretty sure they are doing two digit adding and subtracting in private school second grade too.

OP here- before this becomes a discussion of Public vs. Private, I just wanted to say thanks for the input. I'm simply trying to make sure I'm aware of what to expect so I can work on these things with my DS.

Is there a list to know which schools are "core knowledge" schools?
