does baby need ID for domestic plane travel?

Anonymous
I am flying (domestic) with my 13 month old. Does he need to have a picture ID? Do I need any paper work to check him on the flight?
Also, can I take jars of food on the plane with me?

Thank you.

I'm not sure about the food, but you don't need picture ID. If you didn't buy him a seat, you should bring a copy of his birth certificate to prove he's under 2.

Also, if he's flying on your lap, you'll need to let the gate agent know so they can include a "child on lap" designation on your ticket. I am assuming this is in the event something happens and they need to know who was on the plane.

Bring the birth certificate (or a copy). When I flew when my daughter was 16 mos, they seemed skeptical that she was under two and were talking about making me buy a last minute ticket. Someone else finally came out and said that she was definitely under 2.

We flew Southwest last month with our 5-month old. They said we needed a copy of her birth certificate, but no one looked at it. So, who knows? I guess better safe than sorry.

In answer to your questions about baby food, below is what is on TSA's website.

Canned or jarred goods such as soup, sauces, peanut butter, fruits, vegetables and jellies: Yes, you can bring it as a carry-on item if it is 3 oz. or smaller container

I was told the same thing about needing a birth certificate but, like PP, no one looked at it.

Here is the TSA website w/info on flying with children: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/children/index.shtm

Call the airline you're traveling on.

We've never been asked for a picture ID or birth certificate although I've always carried a copy of the birth certificate.

Sometimes we were told we needed to check in DS as a lap baby at the gate, sometimes we were told we didn't need to do anything. (Same airline, United).

One time we were forced by a TSA agent at O'Hare to go back to get a separate boarding pass for DS in order to go through security, even though DH's boarding pass was labeled "Lap Baby."

OP here. . .many thanks for all the replies - good to know I may need a birth certificate b/c I would have never thought of bringing it with me! Thanks again.

Also, with respect to jarred baby food, just declare it at security. No need for a plastic bag or anything. At BWI I've always just put the baby food jar and bottle in one of the bins at the checkpoint.

Children who will be traveling internationally must have all appropriate international travel documentation. Children under the age of 18 traveling with an adult, to any of the 50 United States, are not required to show ID at check-in. However, when traveling with a lap child, you may be required to provide proof of age.
