Magazine Subsciptions & Children's Books

I just answered the door to a rambling 20 yo from the South Side of Chicago. He was selling magazine subscriptions and children's books. I think there was threads about other people doing this. He got pissed that I told him I wasn't interested and I had to go because my kids were destroying something (we could hear the loud crash at the door). He was livid! I am shocked by his behavior because he was wasting my time. How can I stop people knocking on my door like this? Would a "No Solicitation" sign work? What do you do? I also dislike the various non-profits that come knocking for petitions and donations. Any advice?
