Elliott and Lashgari - natural birth?

Anonymous
My OB group gets coverage for labor from Elliott and Lashgari. Any experiences or opinions to share? How are they with supporting, or at least not interfering, with an unmedicated birth?

I am seeing them for my 2nd pg (was with them for my 1st as well). I LOVE Elliott and are a little concerned with Lashgari. With my first, I was told for quite some time I was having a big baby. Elliott, older male, was so great at supporting my wishes (at least verbally in the office) for a natural delivery. Lashgari, however, kept telling me that I should prepare for a c-sec which made me really nervous that she was going to push a c-sec if she was on call.

Neither of my drs were on call when I delivered, but Lashgari did put in a fetal monitor (attached to DD's head) when I was laboring. It hurt pretty bad for her to have her hand all the way "in there" attaching this monitor and afterwards she asked me why it hurt so much and then realized that I didn't have an epidural and apologized. She just assumed that I had an epi b/c "most" do.

I told the nurses that I really wanted to try for a natural, or at least vaginal, birth and they told me that I would have the best luck with the dr on call. They were right - she let me go 30 hrs in labor even with my water broken (we had no other complications). When Lashgari came to visit me in post-partum she even told me that she would have never let me go that long in labor with my water broken and would have done a c-sec.

A friend of mine at work just had her DD and DIL deliver babies with Elliott and Lashgari and the nurses in L&D told them that Lashgari is very quick to go to a c-sec. I am really nervous about that now that I am pg with my 2nd.

I really do love this practice, but her eagerness to perform c-secs really scare me going into another pg.

Good luck and I wish you an easy delivery.

Thank you, 21:09, this is so useful! Do you mind giving the name of the doctor who was on call, and whom the nurses praised?

Dr. Kilmer is who delivered our DD. The nurses told me that she would be the one I wanted if I wanted to go natural or at least try everything possible for a vaginal deliver. I have say that I was there when they were really busy and she had delivered like 7 babies that night before me the next morning. I never called the nurses, my husband did everything for me so they pretty much left me alone except a few times when the monitor fell out of position.

I figured that if I didn't call on them, they would all leave me alone and not pressure me into a c-sec due to the amount of time i was in labor with my water broken.

I really liked Kilmer for the short time I was with her.

Good luck

I gave birth to DS in February after Elliott and Lashgari let me go almost 3 weeks past my ultrasound due date. They knew that my baby was measuring big (7.5lbs at 34 weeks) and they still let me go that long. I have absolutely no idea why. And in my follow-up visits they never spoke to me about it. After 19 hours of labor, i was told by the ob on call that i would have to have a c-section. Gave birth to an almost 11lb baby. Lashgari is rough and not the friendliest examiner. Elliott is more gentle and seems more knowledgeable and friendly. But honestly I just felt like I was another number in the office. The receptionist staff is HORRIBLE. Im in the process of trying to switch Obs as there is not a hope I would have this practice again for #2.

Egad. I hope you and your baby are doing well!

Did you ask to be induced or raise the issue of being post-term with them? They should have raised it themselves, of course.

hey this is the pp who was overdue- I asked if they would try to strip my membranes after one week overdue and i was treated like i was imposing on them. Kind of who are you to be telling us what to do? By the way, I called right before that visit because i had terrible swelling and no doctor would get back to me. I had a secreatary tell me (when i called back after a day of no return call) that i needed to go buy support hose. Like i knew what support hose were! So not helpful. I mean I was clearly swelling because baby was due to come out but couldnt!

I'm the 1st responder - To the 2nd responder, I'm sorry to hear about your experience with them. I really do love Elliott and when I got closer to my due date, knowing it was a big baby also, I also asked about stripping my membranes and was told to wait it out by Lashgari. I complained enough about being done with this pg (especially since I was still vomiting uncontrollably every day and not sleeping due to very painful carpal tunnel) that Elliott agreed to induce me on a Tues. Luckily for me, my water the morning before that day.

I am a little nervous the 2nd time around with Lashgari already warning me of a c-sec, so I plan to talk to Elliott about my concerns and expectations. We'll see what that does. I thought about switching to Kilmer, but it seems to be the luck of the draw when you go into labor as to who is on call.

My situation might have been a little different, but I had a breech baby at 36 weeks. I saw both Elliott and Lashgari for follow up appointments and both encouraged a C-section at 39 weeks.

They mentioned the option of an external version, but both seemed to blow it off as useless. Plus, Elliott seemed to be in a rush to just go ahead and schedule the section at my 37 week appointment.

Looking back, I honestly feel that I should've waited another week to schedule my C-section, maybe at 40 weeks. I feel that I got slightly pushed into one. I know that I most likely would've ended up needing one, but I still think they just wanted to rush into the section.

Dr. Lashgari has already mentioned the option of a VBAC, but I'm not sure how supportive she really is of that option if I have a second pregnancy.

21:03 poster here again. The other thing to consider is VHC's C-section rate is in the 40% range. (According to the book City Baby DC).

Does anyone know if that is high in comparison to other area hospitals?

Here's a link to our areas c-section rates:

When looking at these rates, it is important, if you are a first time mom, to look at the rates of firs c-section, not second c-section. If you are hoping for a VBAC with a second child, those rates matter to you, naturally.

But rates also differ across OB groups. And VHC does have the facilities to take higher risk births, which will increase their final c-section numbers unfairly.
