I think he's either foolish or lacking principles, likely a combination, but I don't know why we would care how "smart" he is in any broad sense. Does he govern well?

It isn't a free press - Murdoch expended quite a bit of treasure to buy it.

The really stupid people here are the tea partiers and their wall street puppet masters that have led this country to the brink of disaster. Yet somehow they have convinced enough people that these problems - which are clearly created by congress' unwillingness to support revenue increases and appropriate stimulus - are all the fault of Obama.

I'm not sure how that invalidates the point, which is that something is not true merely because Murdoch pays somebody to say it in an Opinion piece.

Bill O'Reilly, Glen Beck, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh...They are celebrities...they are entertainers...they know as much or as little as any of celebrity, but have a louder voice then other celebrities. Its not like they are there for academic work. What do you want quotas?
