Feedback on Kilmer MS?

Anonymous
We are moving to Vienna in 2 weeks (from out of state), and our daughter will be in the AAP program at Joyce Kilmer Middle School (she is rising 7th). This is obviously a stressful time for her, starting a new school in a new state, and so I thought I would see what I could learn about the school before she started. Can anyone on this board give feedback-either positive or negative-about Kilmer? Any teachers we should be forewarned about, or excited about, if my daughter sees their names on her schedule? How is the principal and administration? Thank you.

We don't go to Kilmer, but welcome to Vienna! We love living here.

Kilmer had a rough reputation for quite a while. Fifteen years or so ago it became an AAP center for most of the surrounding communities. While some parents initially fought it, the school excelled. The school because a top performer, regularly sending amongst the most number of kids to TJ as any school.

Four years ago (or so), the county moved many Vienna GT students from the excellent Kilmer to Luther Jackson in a presumable attempt to boost luther jackson's status. In my neighborhood, people were outraged. They fought to stay at kilmer, and lost. About 1/2 of the AAP families I know keep there kids at the regular MS (Thorou), and half go to Jackson.

You are lucky, you do not have to worry. In three years, I need to decide.

Several neighbors have kids at Kilmer and the kids seem happy there - they are not AAP. Middle school is a hard time for kids, but I think Kilmer is considered as good as any other Fairfax Co. MS.
