Infant car seats/perspiring babies

Anonymous
My 5-month old gets unbelievably sweaty in his Chicco infant car seat. I usually put a small towel/washcloth behind his head and neck, but when I pull him out, his back etc. are fully soaked. I haven't found a way of lining the seat without compromising the integrity of the buckling. Any thoughts? I'm afraid he's going to chafe or burst out into a rash or something.

I have the same issue. Does anyone have suggestions?

I think that anytime a fabric which is vomit/poop/pee-proof is against the skin, it is un-breatheable and thus, prone to cause and trap in sweat. Just make sure that your little one's frontward exposed skin is not also hot-to-touch and take comfort that his sweating is keeping him cool.

Maybe use a car seat cover that is a more breathable material? I know Pottery Barn Kids makes some...

my dd was the same. we took the neck support out ....after reading the manual to make sure it was safe. She is much happier after we did that.

I have a 5-month old (almost 6-months) and a Chicco car seat as well. My DS also gets sweaty in it. I only use the car seat in the car now to minimize his time in it. I no longer use the travel system; I just put him in the Chicco stroller separately. I also don't carry him around in the car seat unless it's a quick in and out on an errand. It's so heavy anyway and DS has almost outgrown it so it's not very comfortable for him.

If you can, put the AC on for a little while before everyone gets into the car. This will cold the seat's temp. so that the seat can absorb your child's heat instead of your child absorbing the seat's heat. I did this....in Texas!

Throw and unfolded cloth diaper against the back of the car seat.

I had the same problem with my Snugride in Metropolitan pattern. I called Graco and they sent me a new cover (different pattern & material) and the problem went away immediately. I just told them that my DS was overheating and they sent me the new stuff free of charge. The one thing I did while I was waiting for the new pad to arrive was to put a terry-cloth diaper changing pad over the seat and cut slots for the straps. At least it put a barrier b/w him and the carseat material and it helped absorb the sweat...but really the only thing that totally worked was getting a new pad. If your baby is really young, I'd even consider just buying a new carseat if the manufacturer won't help you out. My DS was so miserable in his hot carseat...even in January!
