Boosterthon Runs at MCPS schools?

So please tell us how they work. They don't use class time? They don't encourage the kids to call all their family members? They don't hand out prizes and show the kids what they need to do to get those prizes. Please let me know how you think they work.

Well there's need to "think". You can just SEE a copy of the video that Booster had put up which SHOWS what it looks like inside a classroom (but then annotated by somebody else).

I don't know if I'm allowed to post a link here, so just search YouTube for a video entitled
"These Pros Enter Classrooms Nationwide to Monetize PreK-6 Children".
(Booster *used* to take up to 70% as shown in the video - but they top out at 50% now.)

Let get the MCPS board members on board with Boosterthon antics.

OMG, that YouTube video! So crazy! Glad we don't have this at my kids' school--and good to know, should the suggestion come up!!

Boosterthon has started at my kid's school and the onslaught of communication is ridiculous. Daily emails, if not more, updates to the FB page, and the worst Robocalls!

B-b-but, schools are underfunded!

I've worked at two different schools where the school/PTA organized its own Fun Run. We got to keep 100% of the profits and there was no instructional time lost on stupid assemblies.

Robocalls for fundraisers? Yuck

Did any MCPS schools/PTAS do Boosterthon this year? If so - was it successful? How did parents react? Is your PTA going to do it again't next year?

Boosterthon is evil and should be banned from mcps.

Our school did direct donation instead. We raised 10% less than what we netted from Boosterthon. The difference was that our kids weren't harassed in school.

Don't do it.

No way. Really?

You know that the "character lessons" are just manipulation right?

Or kids whose parents simply don't want 50% of their donation going to Boosterthon?

They are truly evil

Our school (W cluster, mind you), raised 60k from a boosterthon. We love it, and it's the best fundraiser. So keep on selling wrapping paper and candy bars, non-W schools. So glad we live in a W cluster.

It doesn't bother me that 48% goes back to the company. That does seem in the ballpark with these fundraising companies. Look at Girl Scouts - do people buying the $4 box of cookies realize that only ~ $.70 actually goes to the troop and the rest to the Council?

It would be great if parents took it upon themselves to organize a school fun run and have all the money raised stay in the school. But unless your school has those type of parent volunteers, they will have to outsource the organization/work behind the fun runs.

I think there's a meaningful difference between

-$0.70 goes to the Girl Scout troop and $3.30 goes to the Girl Scout Council

and

-50% goes to the school and 50% goes to a for-profit company

You forgot that with GS you also get cookies for your money! I am still eating my way through this year"sstash of trefoils.

I also have some great wrapping paper from 5 years ago.

With boostetthon you dont get anything.
