This lawsuit was filed just before the 2023 Child Victims Act was changed on 05/31/2025. Under the 2023 Act, the victim of a sexual abuse could collect up to $1.5M per incidence (private schools) with no statue of limitation. The updated law allows the victim to collect up $700,000 per claimant. Depending on how this case goes, it could be really costly for SSFS. https://apnews.com/article/sex-abuse-lawsuits-maryland-28c70db3c55e36b2781062787e3e6e6a |
I’m not making this up. I was looking at all the open cases with ssfs after this article came out. There is a case filed in May that is open against ssfs citing the child’s victim act. Just go to the Maryland court case search https://casesearch.courts.state.md.us/casesearch/inquiryByCaseNum.jis and look up C15CV25002294 This is a public accessible database. Most cases against ssfs are contract. This one is child victims act. Being that it sounds more serious I wondered if anyone knew what this was about. I’m not being a “hater” but I am concerned that there is such a case against the school. |
This is fascinating because that field has changed since I noticed it after the WaPo article...it was previously filed as Tort - Negligence, and I assumed that was filed as a result of the closure. |
That for me is the cut off Who the hell hires anyone from Liberty University? |
I don't care what color the student's family is, but it's laughable that the "Quakers" with all their pablum about charity and mercy are suing poor people that don't have the money to pay. Under the veneer of religion all these places are just greedy corporations at heart. |
[/b] This is an old thread. The school said earlier this month it is not proceeding against the parent. This has been discussed upthread: To the SSFS Community: The following email was sent yesterday to SSFS parents, guardians, faculty, and staff: Aug. 3, 2025 Dear SSFS Families, I want to make you aware of an article in the Washington Post today that reports how Sandy Spring Friends School pursued legal action for non-payment against a preschool parent who accepted, but ultimately did not enroll, at our school. Though financial stewardship is a priority for our school, the approach taken to resolve this matter at the time by the prior administration was misguided, and does not reflect the community values of SSFS. I have contacted the parent to apologize on behalf of the School, and to let her know that SSFS will not be seeking any tuition payments from her. While the staff members involved in pursuing legal action in this case are no longer employed at the School, Sandy Spring Friends School is now reviewing how and why the decision to pursue this legal action was made. In the coming weeks, I will also be studying and revising admissions contract procedures and business office practices. As I begin my new leadership of the School, I am committed to ensuring that Sandy Spring Friends School’s practices align with our founding Quaker values. Warmly, Dr. Sean Hamer Head of School |
