Food hacks to deal with rising food prices/inflation

Chop your own veggis for salads instead of buying chopped salad kits.

Buy whole chicken and butcher it at home, instead of buying cut up skinless and boneless chicken.

Soak beans overnight and pressure cook it next day, instead of buying cans of beans.

How do you thaw them? I've tried about six different ways suggested on the internet and unless I'm baking them in a pie or something, when eating them cold, they often taste "off" and the texture is always gross.

Someone seriously just typed the words "eat squirrels" and "buy half a deer."

Have I inadvertently wandered into West Virginia Rural Moms?

Elected leaders can't fix inflation. If that was the case, we'd still be in big trouble as we have no ability to elect leaders in countries around the world that are also suffering from inflation. Global economy = global issue.

You're a moron. Who do you think decides how much money the government spends and puts into the economy? Who determines the fed rate? Who affects the money supply (M0, M1, M2)? Debt ceiling? Oil production leases? Gas reserves? Who talks to OPEC members? Who negotiates peace deals? Get a clue!!!! People are in charge of these matters.

Look at this money supply chart:

https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/M1SL

Look at just the incredible amount of extra money recently put into circulation since the pandemic. Its mind boggling.

If you're the person who posted that we should "pray that an elected official fixes inflation," you have no business whatsoever calling anyone else a moron, skippy.

ok, now explain why inflation is world wide and hitting countries with austerity spending measures in place

Explain why the economy goes to sh- - every time a democrat is in charge. Explain why gas prices skyrocket when a dem is president. When that happens everything gets more expensive. Keep saying that the dems are innocent and looking out for the less fortunate but anyone with a brain and eyes can see what’s really happening.

Sweetheart, you're talking to people with brains. Go back to Truth Social. It's more your speed.

None of what you said is true. Try listening to some real sources to get your info next time and get out of your bunker.

What? Like CNN
No. I don’t need to listen to anything (and I don’t) to tell me what I’m seeing with my own two eyes. But you keep watching the “news” to help you cope.

You are a walking, breathing Exhibit A for The Dunning Kruger effect.

What brands do you recommend? I love canned tomatoes, but hate it when they have that lingering metallic taste.

For us, I order meats when they are on sale at Omaha Steaks, Kansas City Steaks and Schwanns + keep them in our freezer and have enough food for a month (small fridge/freezer). Then, when my dh goes to store,we do not have any meat costs. I do not eat meat, so we save that way too. Empty-nesters.

What do you do?

We eat less meat and feel better and save money and planet.

Here's your Sanctimony Trophy.

NO: I either look for DOP certified San Marzano or buy the Cento San Marzanos.

I just refuse to pay $4.50 for bagels when they used to be $2.50, so I don’t buy bagels. Same with bread. I’ve cut out a lot of things I used to eat, just because I won’t pay the price increases and now make food from scratch. I feel like the poors will fare better, only because we know how to tighten our belts more than DCUM with their designer goat cheese.

I'm. a long time budget shopper and I tend to agree, however, my big challenge has been that I've used the sale/buy ahead strategies for years and the sales are no longer there. Most staples were on a 6 week sale cycle (or sales around certain holidays). So I would always buy butter when it was on sale for the lowest price and get enough to last until the next sale or buy enough baking supplies during the pre-christmas sales to last for 6 months and that strategy is just not working anymore.

I agree. I used to do this strategy, but the stores don't do sales like they used to.

I do this with Costco for cleaning supplies. They discount on a regular schedule, so when I see laundry or dishwashing soap, I pick one up and store in the basement until we actually run out. Saves a few dollars each, and helpful for things we go through regularly.

I do that at CVS on detergent + paper products- many weeks- it's spend $30 + get $10 off my favorite P+G products.

I do CVS coupon like this too! Costco used to have better sales, but now it's less dollars off what it used to be. For example, I love Kerrygold butter. Costco had it sometimes on sale $5 off per pack ( 4- 8 oz each sticks); but few months ago, it was only $3.5 off. I'm running out of butter, and wait for Costco to put them on sale; but I'm afraid, it won't be a big sale, or it might not do it at all.

Try the Kirkland brand grass fed butter in place of Kerry gold. WE like it.

“Practically free?” That has not been my experience. Unless you grow from seed, which, in the DC area, requires enough room and a proper set up to do, the amount of produce you get from a garden rarely offsets the cost of buying plants, etc. If you didn’t start a compost pile years before you need to buy hummus and fertilizer. That assumes you have a garden with sufficient space and enough sunlight, which I currently do not.

+1, we had a crappy year with our garden. Eggplants never took off, Bell Peppers were small and crappy. Did ok with the tomatoes so there are several batches of roasted tomatoes in my freezer waiting to be pureed into sauce. It varies so widely year to year. Last year we had sooooo many bell peppers and two years ago I was handing out cucumbers left and right.
