Fun fact - Sargent originally painted this with the left (looking at the painting) strap of the dress hanging off her shoulder but it was ridiculed by art critics so he repainted it on the shoulder.

That checks, but of course a bodice like that is not getting an assist from the straps, so if the chain were down her right shoulder, the bodice would not flop away from her body as depicted.
