Aps fall boundaries

Honestly, given all the CAFs that have been built in Arlington over the last decade, it’s impossible to balance the socioeconomics of schools in South Arlington. This proposal, while maybe not being the absolute best they could do for Drew, also isn’t the worst. They aren’t sending Park Shirlington or the newer CAF on Columbia Pike to Drew. Massive resistance works, in Arlington anyway. It will be a cold day in hell when they upzone the identical transit corridor of “Langston BLVD” to do its fair share to further affordable housing in Arlington. They wouldn’t even consider making the area around EFC METRO accessible to anyone but SFH owners. It’s the county’s number 1 priority, and they won’t disturb the status quo, because then the will be waking into a hornet’s nest. All are welcome, just south of 50.

They are only moving 60-70 students to Drew, many of whom will either option out or go to private school. This is just a prelude to sending Columbia Grove to Drew to fill it. It’s literally across the street from a Planning unit that is being moved to Drew, and it’s not in Abingdon’s walk zone. It’s just a matter of time before it’s moved.

Columbia Grove/Columbia Forest could potentially shift north in the upcoming larger scope boundary change. Maybe that's why they are holding off on moving it now. I think they may need Drew to absorb more of Oakridge's kids...

Columbia Forest resident here. Shift north? Where? We’re stuck here with many elementary schools close by, but unavailable to neighborhood kids for one reason or another. Randolph, Campbell, Claremont, Carlin Springs, Abingdon are all closer to me than Drew. I can’t remember if my part of the neighborhood is going to Drew or not. It’s exhausting and I know it will change again in a few years.

APS announced no boundary adjustments until next year when the whole county is on the table. Good move.

Just for Drew though. Looking over the presentation, sounds like APS encountered some totally predictable resistance and pulled the plug. They’ll wait until overcrowding is bad to force the change.

Lolololol

They've pulled this one before.

They've been promising a whole county re-do for years. What's the likelihood it will happen next year when they'll still be dubious about enrollment post-COVID and with VLP?

This. Why would they redo boundaries on crappy data -- they do a bad job as is when they have "good data".

When are they doing HS boundaries with the new 600 seats at WL?

None, I’d say. They probably do need a couple years for the data to show that spurred by the pandemic, far north Arlington has because just too rich to send their kids to public school anymore. The real or imagined threat of eliminating accelerated learning will contribute as well. My guess is Tuckahoe becomes an option school as a result. Route 50 will remain the dividing line and Drew is still screwed. One of those CAFs is going to Drew. Maybe both if enough elementary aged kids show up in Crystal/Pentagon City highrises.

This fall, moving about 400 students from Wakefield and then using rest capacity to expand IB

I think waiting also allows them to potentially move another option school.

Which school will get moved and where?

They're not doing the TJ and W-L boundary adjustments? Or they're only deferring Drew?

Only deferring Drew.

Hopefully they take care of the island of kids currently zoned for Yorktown but go to Ashlawn and Kenmore. It makes no sense. About 5 kids will go to high school and know no one. How does this small amount help with over crowding?

APS has made clear it has no problem screwing these kids over unfortunately, and won't fix it. They are basically like "oh well, kids are resilient, they'll be fine!" 🤷‍♀️
