I just stumbled across the website for William E Doar Performing Arts Public Charter School... Does anyone have information or expierence with this school? There philosophy seems spot on...focusing on Gardner's "multiple intelligences"- using an integrated arts curriculum that stresses academic achievement. There test scores ranked them 9th among DC charter schools- higher than Haynes and Stokes- and their scores are rising every year. They opened a new campus in NW (soldiers home campus) and the grounds are amazing! I just called and the wait-list isn't too long- and there are still spots on the NE campus roster... Any info about this school would be greatly appreciated! My son is currently enrolled at a very popular charter with a mile-long waitlist, but I am thinking about switching! |
can I ask what school your son is enrolled in now? |
I am also considering putting my child (3 yrs old) at this school. It sounds great. I am still a bit leary because of the new location/merger with Tri-community school that I know little about (other than that they didn't make the scores, but not sure I care about that just yet). I have another option at a popular charter school, but I love the idea of the performance arts and am also impressed with the "intelligences" based curriculum. Did you find out anything else? I am going to go up there on the 26th (when they are doing testing of new students) to try to get a better feel for things. |
FWIW in the "charter" circle, Doar is highly regarded. And given the volatility of the charter industry, it has a much higher potential of longevity because because it makes sense as a charter, i.e. a curriculum that's truly an alternative and not just trying to do a better job of basic education than a public school. Getting the old soldiers' home location is a hugely positive move that will surely increase it's appeal. Tri-community is basically being taken over more than "merged".
Not sure this helps. Good luck! |
