Crossfield Elementary - 2010 scores

Anonymous
Does anyone know why Crossfield's test scores went so low in 2010? We are planning to buy a house there, and up until 2009 I think the scores were great, it has a level IV center in it, greatschools gave it a 9. And in 2010, the scores were considerably lower and greatschools rating was a 7. I'm so disappointed. I'm moving out of the Floris area, and I'm wondering if I will be doing the right thing, because DC will be ready to go to Kindergarten this year. I just dont want to feel like I should have stayed back in Floris area.

I have a rising 4th grader at Crossfield. Indeed, there is a Local Level IV there (not a center, the Crossfield population who is eligible, and chooses a center feed into Hunter's Woods Center). We have been very happy at Crossfield, with the exception of the current large class sizes. I try very hard not to base my entire decision on test scores, there is so much more to a school than that.

Other than lack of diversity (compared to Reston schools), it is a great school. Good leadership, Good PTA and not too many alpha parent types.

Talking about lack of diversity, have these been any instances where there was any sort of racial discrimination against Asians or Indians/Pakistanis? Again, in Floris, the majority group is Asians going over 50%. But in Crossfield, its 75% White, so am wondering if any parents felt that their Asian children were feeling left out in any way?

I'm not at Crossfield, but I like to look at data.

From the scores, it's clear that the 3rd grade tests a year ago were the crux of the lower rating. (These would be the scores of the kids who just finished 4th grade this past June.) They are a group of about 83 kids total. So, just one or two kids not passing compared to the preceding year, and you get a lower overall pass rate for each 3rd grade subject and for the school as a whole. (i.e. instead of 95% of the 3rd graders from 2009 school year passing reading, "only" 87% of the 2010 3rd graders passed. With only 83 kids in the whole class of 2010, just a few less kids passing can result in that kind of "down grade.") I'm sure there is nothing to worry about when it comes to Crossfield.

Are non-Asian children excluded or discriminated against at Floris?
