Recent ranking of elementray schools for Va, especially Northern Va?

Looking for a recent ranking of elementary schools by test scores for Virginia (esp. N.Va) but finding lists from 2008. Can you point me to more recent rankings please?

No.

FFS, let's not give test scores any more prominence than they already have.

You can get generalized/composite test score rankings on greatschools.org. However, I caution you that the scores don't necessarily reflect how great the school is or how great the teachers are -- it mainly reflects the over all achievement of the student body. Just because the student scores are "average" for Va. students (and, by the way, the ratings are made as a comparison to all students in VA), doesn't mean that the teachers are doing a bad job, it means that the kids scored on par with the average passing rate in Va.

So, be really careful about labelling the school/teachers as "bad" even when the composite scores are low -- what the students bring to the SOL tests can vary greatly. Students can get a very good education even if there are a lot of poorer or ESOL kids at that school. Also, the difference in pass rates b/t a school that is a "2" and a school that is a "10" can be about 6 percentage points in total pass rate.

Agreed. Plus, in Fairfax County schools, the schools with GT/AAP Centers will have higher scores, and that will artificially weight those schools as being "better."

While I don't think a school should be judge only by its test scores....You can make your own list, if you really have that time, by going to the county websites and looking up each school individually. Test scores are available. But keep in mind about the GT schools like the previous poster stated.

What do you suppose should be given prominence?

2008 was the last time the Post ranked local elementary schools (and only in Northern Virginia) in terms of advanced scores on standardized tests. They have not done a ranking since, although I doubt the results would be much different.

Here were the top five in the Post list:

1. McKinley Elementary (Arlington)
2. Key Center School--for students w/intellectual disabilities (Springfield)
3. Churchill Road Elementary (McLean)
4. Greenbriar West Elementary (Fairfax)
5. Louise Archer Elementary (Vienna)

You can build your own ranking from the Virginia Department of Education site:

https://p1pe.doe.virginia.gov/reportcard/

Report cards for schools, school divisions, and the commonwealth provide information about student achievement, accountability ratings, attendance, program completion, school safety, teacher quality, and other topics. Reports may be viewed and downloaded as PDF files or Microsoft Excel files.

School Report Cards
To view the report card for an individual school, select a school division, and then select a school within the division and choose a format. You may also select a school directly.

This list clearly shows how a schools with a GT Center appear to be "better" schools. All 7 of the Fairfax County schools in the top 10 list are GT Centers. Of course schools with a GT Center are going to have better test scores than non-center schools. Duh. This is why you need to look deeper into a school than just a list.

Are these lists based on test scores? It looks like it, but I'm not sure.

Yes, I think they are based on SOLs.
