Do a lot of DC parents encourage publics because of DCTAG?

After sending your DC to a top 3 private to you find it a step down to send your child to UNC, Penn State or Maryland just to take advantage of DCTAG? I don't mean to dismiss these school, heck I went to a large state school myself, but wouldn't Wilson just be the way to go if you're going to a public college?

I agree pp. Might as well go to Wilson and save the big bucks if the kid wants to go to a public college. The $10k a year from DC Tag doesn't go far enough when you're paying out-of-state tuition.

In some states, it does. Not UVa., but a lot of states are currently $17 - 23K for out of state.

It ended up being cheaper than a state school for my DS to attend a SLAC. His tuition after DC TAG would have been about 23,000 for a state school. The SLAC he will attend gave him a ton of aid, plus a scholarship, so his fees for the year are about 12,200. Full tuition and fees at this school are about 54K.

Based on the people I know at Big 3 schools the kids who choose places like UVA and Michigan do so because it is a good fit for them rather than to get the $10k from DC. I do know people from big 3 schools who have gotten DCTAG but it hasn't driven the college choice, just been a nice thing after the decision was made.

Yes, my kid wanted to go to private high school. The deal was that she would have to attend public university because the private school money was going to pay for high school and DCTAG covers a lot of the out-of-state tuition. For some schools it covers all of it.
