Maybe we should make a line item on tax returns that calculates: Your Total Government Benefits. Then people would know how many freebies they had been given.
Apparently we do not see a tax credit as welfare, even though that was exactly what Reagan had in mind when he took the idea from a fringe concept to a mainstream giveaway. We do not see social security/medicare as a social benefit, probably because we erroneously think that we pay a fair premium, but of course we don't. The only one I would pick on is GI bill. If I understand the program correctly, it is used as a recruiting tool and in that sense may be the equivalent of a hiring bonus. |
And of course no one looks at mortgage deductions as welfare. WTF else is it? |
