ISO reality check: Crofton to DC commute - Crofton life

I posted this in the real estate section but no takes. Hope 2 have more luck here!

Soon-to-be single mommy of preschoolers, working full time in DC, currently living and commuting from the boonies of south Anne Arundel. My co-parent and I believe it is best for the kids to have both of us living in the same county (social activities, community involvement, friends, distance to mom & dad who will be sharing custody). I'm considering Crofton (the closest I can get to the city inside AA boundaries) and would like to hear your recent experiences with the commute (either driving or via public transit?) and potential quality of life for a single parent of small kids who would otherwise be happiest living in the District.
