Tea Party says you should have to own property to vote

Anonymous
"Tea Party Nation President Judson Phillips said denying the right to vote to those who do not own property "makes a lot of sense" during a weekly radio program.

"The Founding Fathers originally said, they put certain restrictions on who gets the right to vote," Phillips said. "It wasn't you were just a citizen and you got to vote."

"Some of the restrictions, you know, you obviously would not think about today," he continued. "But one of those was you had to be a property owner. And that makes a lot of sense, because if you’re a property owner you actually have a vested stake in the community."

"If you're not a property owner, you know, I'm sorry but property owners have a little bit more of a vested interest in the community than non-property owners."

Approximately 33% of Americans are renters, according to the National Multi-Housing Council."

Oh my god, people self identify as members of the tea party! How can they get away with saying this crap out loud?!!

Oh the old feudal system. That was the order of the day. Does not surprise me at all.
I always get the sense that history has romanticized the whole thing.
After all, black men and Indians could not vote. Only white men

I think it is a good idea actually. Encourages home ownership. Weeds out the riff raff.

I rent because there's no way I could ever afford a home in this area. I work and pay my taxes though. Why shouldn't I be allowed to vote and why does this make me riff raff?

I wonder how he would define property. Do condo or co-op owners count? How about owning a vacant lot? A share of a vacant lot? A boat? A car?

To be fair, I don't think we can judge the movement based on one person. He may be "president" of a group called "Tea Party xxx", but I suspect he was chosen by some small group, if not self-appointed.

Did you not notice what happened the last time we did political things to "encourage" home ownership? Gaaah!

You also had to have a penis to vote.

So many people say the actually support the constitution and bill of rights this country was founded on - but yet, rarely do people take the time to actually understand how outdated some of the it is.

I'm actually in favor of this even though I think the tea party is a bunch of idiots.

Oh, good, so only the landed gentry can vote - would that be the same monied people who are telling their congressman not to raise taxes on hedge fund managers because somehow, someway it could affect job growth? The same monied people who'd rather get rid of the entire social safety net in the name of keeping taxes so historically low we (the country) can't pay our bills? Hmm, somehow, I don't think this one will fly. At least not among the sane.

I live in a one bedroom condo which I own. I don't think I'm landed gentry (being a single mom). However, I worked hard to own my own place - so yeah, I'm in favor it. As I believe I have a little more vested in this country as I work hard, pay my taxes and own part of the American dream - vs. someone who just rents it.

Seriously???? The person who rents doesn't work hard, pay taxes? Perhaps that person decided he didn't want to get in over his head, made the right financial decisions and is renting? This is BEYOND ridiculous. Do you realize that the impetus to get everyone home ownership is partially responsible for the housing meltdown because politicians viewed home ownership in exactly this way - so they created economic policies that would allow otherwise financially unqualified persons to take loans to buy houses they could not afford. Now their houses are upside down or in foreclosure and they would have been much better off renting.

FWIW, I own my house (or at least its mortgage and a bit of equity) and I would NEVER advocate this position. Talk about across the board disenfranchisement. This country is a Democracy for goodness sakes.

It's a great idea, especially in a transient area like DC. Those who are vested in the area get to make the decisions.

I hope all the insane posters are one and the same person, or are being sarcastic.
